I had Xubuntu (XFCE GUI) on an old K6 333Mhz Laptop, it ran awesome. As of 7 (Feisty Fawn) everything is pretty automatic. Foreseeable problem is the Audio Driver. Ubuntu hates older soundcards.

Ubuntu Feisty Fawn has been the fastest and cleanest distro that i I have ever used!!

Straight Ubuntu would probably be too much for his computer to handle.
Xubuntu or Fluxbuntu would probably do ok, as they use a lighter window manager, and so they tend to run better on older machines.
I'd agree with with chipp too on Zenwalk. Its also pretty nice.
