can someon tell me what is the true differences between

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor

and

Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 Conroe 2.93GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557X6800 - Retail

or

Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 Kentsfield 2.66GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80562QX6700 - Retail

and what the performance aspect differences are?

DVD encoding's faster with Quad but overall fastest CPU is Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 Conroe 2.93GHz. Quad CPUs make a HUGE different for DVD encoding and multithread games.

Check out the reviews on the QUAD 6700 VS the Xtreme X6800

EDIT: NEVERMIND, the price difference is like 10 bucks on newegg!!
GO QUAD DAMAGE FTW :THUMB:
Q6700 at 968$
X6800 at 972$
Q6600 at 535$!!!

EITHER WAY! save yourself some cash and get the Q6600. The reviews HERE point that there is no SIGNIFICANT performance gain between the quads to justify the hike in price. Save the cash and get yourself a 8800GTS or 8800GTX. then you will see some real FPS.

Very few current games utilize multiple cores. However applications (such as DVD encoding and extremely intensive graphics/database work) can benefit greatly from the extra cores. The C2E is built on the Conroe architecture which is proven to be a very solid one for performance. I believe the Kentsfield architecture leans more towards the application usefulness and less towards the gaming capabilities.

hmm. so when price drops on july 22nd the q6600 will be somewhere around 255. and the extremes will still be in the 5XX i think. so is the Q6600 a worthy upgrade from the E6600. I see some reviews say yes and some reviews say no.. i guess it depends on what i do. but for the general computer user, is it?

I can encode a 4.7GB dvd, including burning times in under 10 minutes in Nero. If that helps. (Using 86% CPU)
---Using a program that only uses 1 core it takes me around 40 minutes.

Quad core really isnt worth it yet, unless you plan on getting crysis and alan wake. Those are really the only games that are going to benefit. Alan Wake requires a quad core to enable some of the graphic features, such as advanced physics, water, and lighting. So if you really want a future proof computer, Id grab a Q6600 or QX6700. Make sure you grab a after market cooler cause stock cooling really doesn't cut it on these.

I'm happy I got a quad. If you have the money i'd get one.

EDIT: Oh yea, Quad core really isnt worth it if you arn't getting vista, or if you havn't already. Why? XP does a horrible job at using cores compared to vista. I wouldn't be surprised if Alan Wake is vista-only.

well if you plan on keeping it for a while then i would go quad core, if game developers ever get around to utilizing more cores it will come in handy, plus if you fold you could do smp while you play games

like alot of things its not used now but in the future im sure it will be used
