Just try it, I'm 100% sure with the pagefile disabled you will lose a good 10FPS.

Disabling the page file isnt going to affect a ram test.. Because that ONLY uses the ram. A program like 3dmark06 or any game, uses the pagefile as well.

10FPS from what? 3DMark? If so, which test? How many points?

Yes, 3dmark06, disable the page file and run the first game test, and i'm sure that your FPS will be lower then they usually would be if you had a page file.

Atleast on this computer, my old computer, my moms computer, and 2 of my friends computers. Every single computer i've tested scores alot less in games and programs with no page file.

From what I've read I've got out of paging files is...

- You need it for some games and programs. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. needs 2 gigs so there is no point turning it off and on. Also some programs.

- If it is used to faster swap files from ram to HD, then its like an extension of ram. How would this slow you down?

- if you have a separate HD Place the page file there. it will run faster if you want the best performance. (Preferably at the front of the drive.)

- If you have 500GIGs then whats the harm of using a WHOLE 4 GIGs and never worrying about it again?

- To set up I've read, defrag the drive. set the page file to custom Ex. 1024min and 1024max. so u have a solid 1GIG that doesn't need to be formatted.

Maybe the main reason it's believed that turning of virtual memory helps is because with systems with a large amount of physical memory the pagefile isn't used as much, so turning it off has little performance decrease. I've experimented with this and found no noticeable benefit to having it off. I have mine on a separate drive and with initial and max size set the same.

Ok, firstly you cant actually turn off virtual memory. You can but windows will still create one. In fact it cant run w/o one.

Secondly, Ive found the best setting is 1.5 times & 4092 max (if your running 2gb of RAM). Turning it off or changing the settings doesnt improve performance & if anything reduces performance or creates problems.

What problems does it create or would it??

And on a separate drive left alone, done so no defrag is needed whats the harm unless you have a 20 gig. HD and no space for it?

I have it on a second drive and a separate partition for just the page file. I never have to defrag it or worry about it. never had a problem. And I don't have to turn it off and on to play STALKER.
