I beleive the NSA worked with AT&T as they own a huge amount of cable in the US, and claim that anything that travels on their cable is theirs.
Like rabid said, they have been working on this for a while.
Most big search engines record what you search for too, hope thats no big supprise.
All IM traffic of mine is encrypted, thats about it.
