Linux Fedora Core 6 help

Thread Starter
Ok so I managed to successfully put FC6 distro on my laptop and everythings running fine.

So far I've managed to get a hang of the basics like connecting to a wireless network, using Network Manager, and a bit of Terminal.

What I don't understand is I managed to install Yum and WINE without any problem, the issue I have with that is all I did was type "install yum" in the Terminal and somehow it knew what I was requesting and appearently downloaded it from a reposotorie (?) and then I did the same thing "install WINE" and it downloaded that from somewhere else.

Are there some kind of config files stored in this Distro that point to a list of reposotories so they know what I mean when I say "install yum"?

Its not like I can open a command prompt in Windows and say "install winRAR" and it knows what I mean lol.

This is all so new and totally foreign to me and makes no sense, I've read a bunch of FAQs and starter guides but I'm still completely clueless on how this O/S Distro is built.

if what you type is in a repository you have, then it will install it. but it has to be right. it doesnt guess. yum and wine are in the repos, as is lots of other things. you can enable other repos as well. so you can install a lot of programs by just typing "yum install -----" (--- being the program name). however, if you dont type it correctly it will not find it obviously. hope that helps.

Your repositories are kept in a file. I dunno what it is for FC6, but for Ubuntu (as an example) it is /etc/apt/sources.list (ubuntu uses apt instead of yum)
