Halo 3 Beta - First Impressions

Thread Starter
I got Crackdown for $10 from an online quiz just for the beta. Today was my first time playing and having been a long time player of Halo 1 and 2 I was pretty excited.

3 beta maps -
1.) Valhalla - Remake of Blood Gulch/Coagulation. This is a large map and is pretty annoying when you find yourself with only an AR out in the middle of nowhere. Similar to having an SMG against a BR in Halo 2. This map utilizes some of the new transporting techniques. There are 2 man cannons on top of both of the bases instead of having a single teleport. One of the cannons launches you to the middle and the other one will launch you to the side. It's actually pretty difficult to snipe someone out of the air when they go off one of these. The new vehicle on this map is the mongoose. Basically an ATV that can hold 2 people. It is basically only useful for getting around the map or getting the flag. Like I said before this map is annoying when you find yourself with an AR against a long range weapon. Granted there are a lot more BRs than there were on Coagulation.

2.) Snowbound - This map is a midsized map covered in snow (really!?) with tunnels and trenches around the map. There are 2 main bases that have tunnels that connect them. Each room you enter has a shield as a door. You cannot do anything except walk through them. Shooting, throwing grenades, or anything else just bounces off them (basically a bubble shield). If you stay underground it is best to have a shotgun because there is a lot of upclose combat. There is one covenant sniper on the map and a couple BRs and carbines on top of the bases. Most people veto this map when you are in matchmaking. It is not as fun as High Ground or even Valhalla.

3.) High Ground - This is similar to Zanzibar from Halo 2. One team will start inside a base and the other team starts on a type of beach. Each team gets a sniper, and each team gets a heavy artillery weapon. This is the most fun map in the beta just because I loved 1 Flag CTF in Halo 2 matchmaking. The team on the beach can utilize the new gravity lift to lift up the left side of the base wall and sort of sneak in. There is also a bunker right outside the base through which you can enter the base underground. There is a large door in the front of the base which can be opened from inside. If you play the beta, wish for this map because it is the best and most balanced of the three.

New weapons

1.) Spartan Laser - This thing is pretty cool but takes a while to charge. It has around 5 shots, but it is a 1 shot kill if used correctly. You hold down the trigger and charge it up (it takes around 4 seconds to charge up) once it is charged it fires immediately. The shot is very fast so if you are aiming at someone it will not miss unless they duck behind something. It is hard to use if you just wait until you see someone to charge it. By the time the shot is charged you could be dead before you get the shot off. It is best to randomly charge it and hope you spot someone. If you don't see someone you can always switch back to your other weapon and not lose a shot.

2.) Spiker - This is like a covenant SMG. It is pretty useless if you use one, but dual wielded it is pretty good up close. The spikes come out real quick like a machine gun, but they don't track the needles of the needler.

3.) Spike grenades - These things are really cool. They stick to any surface, unlike the convenant plasma grenades which only stick to people or vehicles. They are most useful when you stick them to a wall when someone is coming and watch the needles explode everywhere in them. They can be stuck in people just like plasmas (happens a lot on High Ground) and do relatively the same damage as a regular grenade if not stuck in someone.

I know most of you have probably read all this from bungie, but I just wanted to provide my prospective on the game. In my eyes there are a couple things that will take some getting used to.

1.) Sniping - The look of the sniper is the same as in Halo 2, but once you fire it you can tell the huge difference. You are not able to fire off shots consecutively like in Halo 2. There is a large delay in between shots. This becomes annoying when you don't get a headshot and someone gets away before you are even able to get the second shot off.

2.) Melees - There is not as big of a lunge that Halo 2 has. There were multiple times where I expected to kill someone because I am used to the Halo 2 lunge and I got owned because I meleed air. Again this is frustrating.

/End rant/first impression

I hope that I get used to all the new changes, or they tweak some more after beta. I can honestly say I got dominated a bunch of times (which I am not used to coming from Halo 2). If anyone plays and wants to hit me up for a game my GT is Mmmmmagus.

I played it at a friends house. It looks really promising, except for the laser. That weapon is the stupidest thing I have ever used / been hit with. Take it out and the game will automatically be 10x better.

No. Its not an open beta. You could get in by purchasing certain copies of Crackdown or applying over Xbox live or online.
