Ok well I'm in the market for a video card, the budget is around $150, so which one? I'm a new gamer, I'm still learning, and practicing, DX10 isn't terribly important right now, but may be usefull in the future. Which one of these cards performs better overclocked? If you can think of a better card for the money of newegg, give me a link, but it needs to have a one slot cooler, it can't be huge, I am putting it on a micro-atx board.

Thanks alot guys.

I also give it up to the 1950 Pro, the 8600 is a decent performer and all, but it can't match the performance of a 1950 Pro in games you'll play the next 6 months and probably won't play the games you will be playing in 6+ months at enjoyable frames anyway.

I would say the better investment would be the x1950pro--not just 'cause I'm using it, but because it's a solid card. However, one of your questions was regarding the best performer OVERCLOCKED. Well, my ATI brand doesn't overclock very well. The core mildly OC's, but the memory doesn't OC worth a damn. I could care less 'cause it plays any game I want now at 60+ FPS, give or take, at max detail/settings on stock. I'm not sure how the 8600 OC's. But I've heard it's not so solid of a card, and is a waste of money unless you REALLY want DX10 on a budget. But to be honest, what's the point of DX10 on a budget? I highly doubt that games of the future are going to be LESS graphics-card intensive--in which case, the 8600 is a waste. Might as well save more and get an 8800 if you want a good DX10 card that OC's.

I very much could be selling the 8600 cards short--like I said, I haven't used one, I just "hear" (read) about it. I dunno--it seems like to buy a mid-range vid card right now is a bad idea--if price is an issue and one cannot afford a 8800 768mb card, then buy a x1950pro and save up more money. I didn't mean to insult your card--obviously what I heard about it is wrong. Glad it's holding up for ya! What kind of FPS's do you get in common games/what res do you use?

my moniter's max res is 12x10 but i run COD2 @ 12x10 4xAA 16xAF with soft smoke edges on everything with IQ set via the driver to best, with force bitmaps and filitering optimization off. I dont run fraps while playing but i never get a slow down that i notice, it seems fluid to me all the time, farcry i run at 12x10 4xaa 8xaf driver forced and HDR7 enabled via console. With the \
_displayinfo 1 command i see it drop to around 50FPS in a firefight and average is around 70FPS.

My x1950pro doesn't overclock. You can theoretically overclock the core, but not by much... it's not worth it. You can't overclock the ram, as it is locked. (Though, you can in CCC, but not by much. Takes only 10 seconds and my computer restarts). Basically, the x1950pro is at the max it can be, stable.

I know someone who also has an x1950pro, and it's the same deal.

The 7900's are nice, apparently good overclockers.

Though, I'd personally probably save the money and get a 7600GT now, and later, when dx10 prices go down (if you want to play dx10 games), you could probably get a cheaper, faster card.

Really right now its all about whats fastest in DX9...so go with the 1950pro.
Very nice!
