Starting again

Thread Starter
ok im starting up again with the folding since my amd is just sitting around doing nothing

also i really like the feature that stops it from folding when the laptops on battery power! cool b/c i dont want it to drain my battery like that but i leave it plugged in often.

so i will be folding with my laptop (c2d t7200) and desktop (amd 3500+), do i need to run 2 instances on my laptop or will it use both cores automatically?

Set up 2 directories and run 2 single cores on your laptop. Be sure to give them each a different machine id during setup. Only SMP will run multiple cores that will take advantage of all your CPU cores with just one client. But two single cores may be a better solutions for you if you dont plan to run 24/7 and dont want it to suck the life out of your battery.

yikes!! i started folding on my laptop and there is freakin HOT air coming out the back, like REALLy HOT, is this really such a good idea? lol maybe i should just fold on my desktop

then again it should be designed to be able to run at full load so i'll let it be for a while and check the temps

whats smp? also, I want it set to only fold while its plugged in (which is like 80% of the time anyway), does smp have this feature too?

i set up the normal client with default settings and such, so how do i install a different instance now, do i need to reinstall everything?

thanks!

EDIT: how come i cant set affinity? isnt that how i get each to use only 1 core? it says access denied when i try to set it to only 1 core, but i dont know if its a windows problem.. i can set affinity for every other program...

Your system will run hotter for sure. If you want it to run a bit cooler, set your client to only use 75% of the processors instead of 100%. It wont be quite as fast, but should be cooler.

If you set up a second directory on your system, and then install in that directory as well, it should automatically use the second core. You do have to set the machine id to a different number than your first client. If you want to change any of your setting, just stop the client, then run it again with the flag -configonly. This will allow you to change your settings.

ok i'll try it out, thanks for the help-

i dont mind it running a bit hot, i just dont want to jeopardize the stability/life of the chip

another question.. :

It wont open the installer again! what gives! do i have to close out of my current fah instance to install the 2nd one? ughh something WORK dammit computers hate me lol

ok i just got the vista version of the bsod for some reason, but i booted it up again and seems to work fine now, i am afraid to try runnning the installer a 2nd time tho lol i think that may have caused the crash. how do i set a different machine id or w/e?

thanks for the help!

The power bill should not change with just the laptop and your amd chip.

On the install, download a second copy of the install program and put it in the second directory you created and run it from there.
