Help me find a GPU for a friend!

Thread Starter
Alright, so it was my friends birthday yesterday. I went over to his house to see if he had AGP/PCI-E on his computer. I got and to his room and he has a new pc sitting on his desk.

Yeah they spoil him. Heres the specks...

• Intel® Coreâ„¢2 Duo E4300 dual-core Processor³
• Genuine Windows Vistaâ„¢ Home Premium¹
• 2048MB dual-channel DDR2 memory
• 320GB SATA II (7200RPM, 8MB Cache)²
• 16x Multiformat dual-layer DVD±RW drive
• 15-in-1 Digital Media Managerâ„¢
• Gateway Portable Media Drive Bay

Any, its a Gateway and a pretty good rig, compared to his old one. It costs I think $750 which pisses me off. My friend and I wanted to build him one soooo bad!!!! You can get a way better pc for $750!!!!He ran WoW on all low settings at like 15 FPS. So this is a massive improvement.

The GPU sucks, it's probably onboard or something, didn't get a look. It said something bout a 7600GT, never heard of it.

So! My task for you my friends recommend me a GPU for my friend. I have no idea what a good one would be that could run along with the system without bottlenecking anything. I'm positive something like I have would do fine, but help me anyway.

a 7600gt? Like, the excellent mid-range card that nVidia's had out for more than a year?

He got Windows Vista, so consider getting one with DX10 support (to be future proof) I say GeForce 8800GTS 640MB, GeForce 8600GT, or POWERCOLOR 2900XT (if he has a good PSU).

Best of luck

If he's already got a 7600GT, might want to wait till the better DX10 games come out. By then, they'll (um, ATI) have fixed some of the driver problems and you'll see which GPUs are worth it.

I was obviously joking about the 7600GT...

Anyway, don't you guys think a 8 Series GPU will bottleneck his system. Plus I don't think he plans on spending around $200.

Does he even have a PCIe slot? I know some GateWays with integrated don't have a PCIe slot.

He could get a 8600GTS...

He doesn't want to spend that much money.

It will probably bottleneck.

It has a PCI-E

I think 8600GT/GTS will be perfect. My second choice would be 7900GT/GS
