New here ! Summer build needs advice :-) - Page 2

Thanx for the reply's so far !!! Im already liking it here

Technik - The more simple, the better for me. I like round easy numbers, lol .. but do you think I can push it a bit past 3.2, or would you say thats about the limit ? Also, Im gonna go with 1 graphics card, and most probably the 8800gts. Im just doing basic encoding. I will also check out the Gigabyte boards, although Ive always used Asus with not a problem, so im kinda partial.

Rick - From that site, which case do you recommend, so that I have enough power, and also enough room to handle a 8800gts and big cpu cooler ?? And im going Vista as mentioned, for the DX10 support.

Kip - Keeping my new Sony 16x DL burner to xfer to the new case. I never use floppies, nor any type of cards, so I probably wont be getting that.

Also, Im really in no rush to build this, so I can wait an extra 2-3 months without a big deal. Im just one of those guys that likes to gather all my info and stuff way ahead, and read about new stuff. So thats why I was starting to ask around now.

Alright, so here's they idea, buy the items IN this order. They go by the LEAST volatile in price In my opinion:

Case
Power supply
cd/DVD burner
Sound card
Hard drive
Memory
Video card
Motherboard
CPU
Cooler

CPU mobo and cooler should come last cause you never know what can come out in three months. Right now the standards is DDR2 and SATA II so that wont change for a while, but the cpu, GPU and mobo market is VERY volatile right now.

EDIT: by the way, Go HERE to imput your "current" system stats

You will probably have to use a floppy to install the RAID drivers. But they are like 5$ or free. If anyone knows how to install RAID without a floppy please let me know

The reviews say the 8600 is about the same performance as the 7600 but not as good a deal. I am looking for a good 8800 but will wait until the 8900 shows up or there is a nice price drop.

Don't forget to add rep to anyone who helps you

Save $20 on the same PSU here:

(PS: do NOT get the 'SC' model, unless you like short cables )

Alternatively, you can get an E6320 and an Asus P5B-Plus for about $16 extra. The P5B-plus has the ICH8R southbridge, which really helps with your RAID (the Gigabyte DS3 only has a RAID controller on the PCI-E bus. The southbridge does not support RAID).

why 32bit?

Cuz the 64 bit has no drivers for it. Ok maybe 1 or 2 but not for your stuff

If you have a dual core CPU you need at least Home Premium, but if you get quad you might need Ultimate. I am slightly wishing I had gotten Ultimate as it comes with 64 and 32 bit, runs more processors, memory and hard drives.

Just stopping by to say thanx to everyone for the valueable info ... Rep is on the way.

Right now, I am torn between an e6420 to overclock, and the q6600 to leave pretty close to stock. It seems the quad comes with more baggage (need water, need vista ultimate, etc ..) .. things Id prefer to avoid. Im just looking for a good gaming machine .. good cpu speed, good memory, good video card, and room to grow and handle basic video encoding. Yes, I want to play Crysis and whatever other DX10 games come out, so I will be using Vista Home Premium.

The list Choz put together is looking very nice .. Prices will only go down on most of that stuff, so I am leaning towards that. Wanted to avoid water cooling .. It seems really complicated. Also, I have no idea how to setup RAID .. is it difficult ? I figured just go with 2 hard drives .. 1 320gb for my Vista and all game/program installations, and 1 smaller maybe 160gb for my avi's, mp3's, etc .. stuff that I want to keep after I format (which I tend to do like twice a year).

Appreciate everything so far guys !!

Well, you dont "need" water cooling with the Quad, a Tuniq Tower will do unless you want to do some xtreme overclocking. as for vista ultimate well... hehehehe... If you want it now, i recommend the E6600. If you are not in a hurry, i recommend getting the Q6600 in july when it hits 266$ but then, the E6750 will be 183$ so...

If you only will run the 2 hard drives, one for vista one for music, no need for raid.
