And just how are they planning to provide enough IO for this thing? 1333MHz FSB? FB-DIMMs? It's great that they're trying to think in another direction, but I don't think we'll see any kind of huge adoption of this chip. The Cell has 9 "cores" and there's nothing that can even utilize that.....

It would probably see great uses in super/cluster computing applications which are called 'embarrassingly parallel' such as graphics rendering, some computational mathematics(such as folding, encryption breaking and the like).

Theres multiple reasons for using more over less. Why do you think Tejas failed miserably?
congratulations.

What is the right direction? 1 fast core is certainly not enough, and 100 slow ones are also not enough, we need both IMHO...

2 Socket system and put one of each in FTW or CPU+GPGPU Well or do it all on one chip... like Cell maybe,

There is something to consider however... guess most of you have seen Quake 4 raytracing demo...

Now imagine that with 100 cores, even if they are "slow"...

IBM is also doing some insane stuff with their POWER6 though... supposedly the interger unit is in-order, contrary to near all modern processors... but it manages to wipe the floor with all other cpus on the market...

How would this even be possible...?

No matter how much better the thermal process or die shrink gets they will always have heat to contend with. Anything over 8 Cores seems a bit unlikely with current air cooling...
