Really? Man I did not know Cyrix was bought out. I finished up ECE in 2000, way before that happened. They did cover how to fill out and organize punch cards for Fortran 77 though.

In 2000? Ouch! I guess some computer history is good, would hate to repeat it with quantum punchcards or something

Not only did we use punch cards, we processed on an Eniac. When it went down you had to go into the processor room and figure out which vacuum tube went. Gave us a real appreciation of the transistor. Come to think of it, it was 1995 when I had CE101 which used that old beast. In CE102 we got to use the new Pentium 100MHz processors and the UNIX terminals.

Let me make it clear that this CPU will not be for desktop use. You will only see this in high-end servers and super computers, where highly-parallel execution is much desired. Also, this isnt like they just slapped a bunch of cores together, this is more like the Cell or a GPU-type design, as the cores are more execution units than actual cores.

They're more or less execution nodes, or mini-cores, with their own L2 and such. They have the working part of the core, where the other management and communication features are taken care of on another part of the chip. I'm not sure if the cache will be share-able though, or if they plan to integrate a shared design.

Lol....That new best buy is built on a contaminated superfund site. It's where they used to make ViewMasters. It's not immediately hazardous though- the contamination sits about 100' underground and only poses a threat if you drink the ground water from the onsite wells.
