SMP runs on either 1,2,3,or 4 cores, and i believe it is the consol version (not GUI).

I believe I was unclear.

Can I use Beanyman's tip on the console? I ask this because I don't think I can run the SMP client on only 2 cores when I have a quad core. I have been using the console on two cores since Sunday.

I see... I'm not sure about hobbling the program to only run on 3 cores... check into the F@H forums. Someone there may be able to help you out.

If you're using the F@H console, you can add tags to your shortcut.

eg: "c:\\F@H\\fah.exe" -forceasm -advmethods -verbosity 9

This will force any extra performance boost from SSE or 3DNow, request newer projects from F@H and will give the user a more detailed Client output.

Here's a list of some useful ones you might like to try out.

-forceasm

Instruct the core to use SSE/3DNow assembly instructions if possible, even if it has previously made the determination that the machine may not be handling this well.

-advmethods

Request to be assigned work units from new projects, before they are broadly released to the rest of Folding@home. As among the first to try out new advanced simulations, you may wish to post any observations (positive or negative), questions, or issues at the user Forum.

-config

Allows users to change their configuration information. This includes user & team names (reflected in the stats), whether or not to ask before a network connection is made to fetch/send work, set up proxy servers, preferred work unit type (Folding/Genome), process priority, CPU usage requested (5-100%), whether or not to use assembly loops, whether or not to use deadline information, and Machine ID changes.

-queueinfo

Get information on queued work units. Includes for each unit the status (READY/FINISHED/EMPTY), unit type (Folding/Genome), originating server, and date when the unit was received (local time in GMT), as well as deadline if the server sent that information.

Thanks for the information. I'm going to try SMP tonight and see how that works for me. If it's getting me more points than running the GPU, i'll stick with it (less heat running through my system).

I used to run the Linux SMP via VMWare, but I recently switched over to the Windows SMP client and I've been pretty impressed and I would definately recommend it.

People seem to swear by Linux being faster, but in all honesty I've had great success with the Windows client. My average frame now finishes in just over 11 mins which is actually faster than I was getting using Linux (around 12mins+) and means I should complete a WU in around 17-18 hours give or take. Not bad for 1500+ points, especially since the C2D rig is now folding 24/7 until I can get my new graphics card.

lol, well cept for the puny 200 pointers that take like 30 hours on my machine I'm doing alright. Cept for when I'm gaming, I'm running at 850 or 550 ppd. The 550 is when i get a crappy WU. Anyway, I'm up to about 3k points for the month.... Man, I gotta play less CS:S

Well, today I ran into a rather big problem...

It seems one of my Cores has died on my E6600 for some reason, so I'm now stuck with a single core CPU I'll continue to fold on that as best I can, but it'll certainly not be as good as running the SMP client.

I'll hopefully be able to get a Q6600 at the end of the month... but this really sucks.
