Ghost in the machine

I am absolutley desperate to fix my PC as I need it for work and after over a week of trying to fix it, testing all components, buying a new psu and motherboard, I still can't get it to even post!

Any useful suggestions or ideas on this would be very much appreciated... I'VE NEVER BEEN STUCK LIKE THIS BEFORE IN 16 YEARS of PC use and I think I've tried everything but just can't figure this one out...

My work PC (spec in signature) started to play up a couple of weeks ago. The problem is that when switched on, all drives, the graphics card and all fans power up as expected but there is no beep and no post (also, the 7950 GX2 fans don't max out for a short while as they usually would as it posts). At first, this only happened one in every few attempts to switch on the PC but became increasingly regular until after a few days it only booted one in every ten attempts, then nothing - that is, all seems to power up but no post. Then it just shuts down by itself after a few seconds.

I have had the memory tested on another system and both sticks are OK and I have tried each individually.

I have two gfx cards: a 6600 and a 7950GX2. I have tried each individually - same problem.

I have bought and installed an identical motherboard (P5B Deluxe) and get same problem.

I have tested the CPU in another system and this works fine.

I have reseated the CPU several times and reset the BOIS and CMOS on both motherboards.

Finally I have just bought and used a new quality 600W psu - same problem but now the system shuts itself down automatically after a few seconds (this might be new revision of p5B deluxe though)

P L E A S E H E L P !!!!!! What's going on?

It could be your CPU... i had a intel chip die slowly like the way your explaining the issues with your box...

i would go out and pick up a cheap LGA775 chip just for testing for cases like this. I have a 2.66 celeron that i use to test out boards...

You might also have a short somewhere in the case... try taking out all your components and put your pc together on your desk...

dont plug in your dvd/cd drive just to eliminate that part...

Hmmmm i remember having a somewhat similar problem.
I don't remember what exactly was happening to my rig, just that sometimes it would not boot, or would power on then shut off. Something along those lines.

Anyways i tried everything. Then by process of elimination i decided to swap out my IDE cable going to my media drives.
Then bam, everything works.
The IDE cable i had been using for 3+ years suddenly started to act up.

I tested that same cable in another PC and same thing happened.

Seems to me that the only things left are, your cables, connections, or media drives.

Try it out

swap out all your cables one by one with new ones....

Take everything out of the case, and build it on a desk, and try to turn it on.

Thanks for the tips but I've already changed the IDE cable and have tried each hard drive individually with different cables. Still the same problem. I would have thought the CPU could be to blame too, but I saw it working on another motherboard today... I suppose I will have to just try another LGA775 CPU in the hope the CPU fluked it on the test board (in the PC shop I tried it in).
I will probably have to buy another E6300 at least as I need half decent power for my work. Any final suggestions would be very welcome...

Have you tried a systematic barebones build?

Sorry DuckieHo, yes I have. No post in any configuration. I have taken everything apart, vacuumed all parts and carefully built everything up systematically on the new motherboard with no joy.

Surely if the mboard had shorted it wouldn't begin powering up would it?
