Hello, I have a dell latitude d510 with a celeron 1.5ghz and 256 of memory. I am looking for a very basic linux distro yet easy to use, i will use it mostly for internet browsing and playing music but i would like the fastest one because this laptop with xp is VERY VERY slow. btw i tried ubuntu already and its slow.

Have you tried Open SUSE, Mandriva?

I would say Fluxbuntu (nice link, Ben) or Damn Small Linux would be ideal, as they use the least amount of resources. Also, you could attempt to run Gentoo. It is harder to configure than your average distro, but it utilizes your hardware the best because everything is tailored to your exact system.

Damn Small can be installed from a live CD to RAM (not in your case, you'd need more RAM) and it's the fastest OS evar!!1! But Fluxbuntu looks to be the way to go for you. Glad we could help
