Core 2 Quad or Xeon Quad?

Thread Starter
Ok,

I'm an extreme gamer, but with a limited system (see current specs). However, i'm eventually.... going to build a new system rig for sure. Question is, What kind of system?

Do I go quad xeon or Quad Core 2 duo? (6600-6700). Because I plan some serious video editing and I also want the system to last me 2-3 years with upgrade room also.

I know first off, 4gig's of ram is a +++ for video editing, while 2gb's really is req'd for gaming really, lol.

And is there a "2gb" single stick of ddr 667? or 800 or whatever? If there is, Could the core 2 quad / xeon quad use it?

For theWell, right now 2GB is "enough" for anything you do on your system. but for video/audio editing and encoding, I think you can never have too much ram. 4 GB would be enough. NOW, dont get an asus board, "some" people have reported issues with them not being able to run 4GB correctly. I will test it when i get home, i have an extra 2GB lying around...

As for Quad core vs Quad Xeon, get the Xeon. they are made tougher, to run longer, consume less power most of the time and usually have an insane amount of L2 cache wich can come in handy for gaming and other applications.

EDIT: but if you HAVE to pay MORE for a Xeon with the SAME stats as a C2Q, dont bother.

The current C2 Quads and Xeon Quads that run on a 775 board (The Kentsfields) are basically identical. The higher end Xeon Quads (Clovertown and such which are designed for servers) that run on the 771 boards are limited because of there abilty to overclock is much more limited. Add to that the slower performance of the FB-DIMMS that are required to use the 771 board and you will end up having a nice server, but slower gaming machine.

Future CPUs may change some of this, but for now, you probably wont see too much of a difference between the different 775 version of the Quads.
