Pentium D 940, new AS5, still high temps.

Hi everyone,

I posted last week about my Pentium D 940, it was running under load (Orthos) at 66 degrees, which I understand to be quite high. I have a Zalman 9700 HSF, which I also understand should be doing a better job. Case temp (Asus calls it MB temp I think) is ~32 degrees and HD is about the same, it's only the CPU that's crazy high.

So I removed the Zalman, and re-applied some AS5. Since this is the first build where I have to use thermal grease (last pc I built was years ago...), I'm not 100% sure if I applied it right.

The first time I did it, I followed the instructions on AS website for a dual core (long thin strip), and my temps were still high (65 or 66 degrees under load).

Here's a pic of my cpu with the AS5 before I reinstalled the HSF, can someone tell me if I used too much, too little.

Thanks everyone in advance...

Sounds like your not getting good contact hows it look when you pull the heatsink off is it mashed down and looks like it spreads around some. Im running my pentd 945 3.4@4540 or somthing with 1.50 vcore which really is like 1.38-1.41. And my idle temps are 38-42c and full load 55-58c with a zalman 9500.

that amount looks perfect. try rubbing AS5 on the base of the HSF and see if that helps. of course, not too much.

It looks good to me, it's spread around in a nice, neat circle. I reapplied it several times this weekend, trying with a little more, or a little less to see how that would do, but it still didn't get my temps down more than 2 degrees. I know the AS has a breakin period of 200 hours, but I don't think that after 200 hours my temps will drop 10 degrees...

My next question is: what is the possibility that my temp sensor on my mobo is defective? It seems to be ok, the temp definitly go up when I put it under load, so I don't think that's the problem...

Thanks.

What exactly do you mean? Like instead of applying a thin strip on the CPU, rub some on the base of the HSF instead?

Use a credit card to spread it around i did that method with my old 3.0 pressy takes a few trys but you can get good temps doing that.
