Wipe a HD Clean

Thread Starter
I am in a bit of a dilema at the moment. My Windows XP Home is all messed up at the moment and takes very long to boot up due to a run-in with linux and a guy with 0 computer skills (me).

And, on top of that... I have LOST my Windows disc.

I did manage to find an older spare copy of Windows. It says I cannot use it because the version I have is newer. (The disc has SP1 and mine has SP2.) So I cannot just reformat and reinstall.

Is there anyway I can completely wipe my HD entirely clean, and then I can install the windows with SP1 on it?

boot from the older windows disc

you could also copy the disc onto you harddrive and do a windows share disc where you can integrate XPSP2 into the disc, making it like your new, lost disc...

You need to boot from something to reformat, if the Windows SP1 CD doesn't work, try a Linux LiveCD or RANISH on the UBCD.

I can't just boot from the older disc because it pops up with an error saying that the version of XP I have installed is newer than the one on the disc.

I am confused as to what you meant above.

some computers if you press like alt + one of the F# keys itll go into a program that wipes everything out. You can press it at the Enter setup boot screen. I think F11?

He can boot to the older disk, I do it all the time. The "your current version is newer" only comes up when you insert the disk while in windows. He can boot off the disk format, and reinstall without a problem.

I would want to try Linux (ubuntu) which is how I got into this whole mess, hehe. I was thinking that if I had a clean HD, I should try to get Ubuntu to work FIRST. That way, if I screwed up again, I would not have to take XP off again.

The partition thing confused me in Ubuntu... is there an option to make the whole HD go to Ubuntu and that would just automatically erase XP on it's partition or what?

Kind of... it sounds like you would just need to delete all of the partitions you have on the drive and then create one partition that contains the entire size of the hard drive.

And, I don't know how to do that... Can I do that while in the Ubuntu partition business? Or elsewhere?
