assuming both times mounted and applied perfectly, what is the avg. difference in temps? 2-3c?

also my BT is lapped but not my 6400. if i lapped that what would the difference be?

on a good lap you dont need any thermal paste

then 6-7c

but thats ona a perfect lap , chances are you wont have one untill you have 10+ hrs experience

ok thats theoretical on a PERFECT lap you need nothing to bond cpu and hsf, but really, even with a good lap wouldn't you use like 1/4 grain of rice or 1/2 grain of rice just to smoothen things out?? or do you actually get it lapped SO CLOSE TO PERFECT that you can just clamp 'er tight and have a near perfect heat transfer better than if you had thermal paste?? that would be AMAZING!!!

so how would you get it to that point? 3000 grit?

Here's my result lapping my q6600 which gave me 7-10 °C drop (7 on the coolest and 10 on the warmest core). It's the biggest bang-for-your-buck cooling mod you can do since it'll cost you under $20.

Most people who lap for the FIRST time experience about 2-4C improvement. Some as little as 1C, but I have seen as much as 10C. I would say that 3.5-4.5C is probably at the top of the bell curve overall. Most folks do get a little better with experience and consistent technique.

AS for thermal paste... I wouldn't install a sink without it - but you want to use as little as possible. With matching lapped sink/IHS, you can use the "wiped haze" method.
