Tuniq Vs. Stock

Thread Starter
Right now I am running an Opty 1212 socket AM2 in my comp. When I first got it I ran it with the stock cooler, which wasn't half bad for being stock and all. But then Christmas came around and, OMG Santa brought a TT120 ! I installed it as soon as I could, expecting the north pole in my case... But low and behold it dropped my temp 2 degrees. Could this be right? I was thinking the Tunic Tower was the best of its kind and would have a much more significant impact. Can anyone explain

Is your machine OCed? If so what? Are you talking about idle or load temps? The OEM HSF of the Opty's is a pretty nice HSF and if the stock HSF was already cooling your chip really well, then the TT probably couldn't beat it much more. Or it could also be that it should be reseated and/or lapped. If your load temps only dropped by 2 degrees with the TT, then you need to OC more!!!!!

I never installed the stock cooler in my sig rig.

Going from a zalman 9500 to a TT120 I dropped about 10 cel (and I know the 9500 beats stock)

100% load (folding temps are same as orthos temps for me)

The temps dropped 2 degrees on the load and idle. I don't have it OC'ed at the moment because I only have 1 stock of ram. I guess the next step would be lapping.

Ya I would say the stock cooler wasn't being stressed much. Plus I think it could have something to do with the fact that the bracket for the AM2 mobos is very cheep and doesn't even require you to take out the mobo to put it on, its just a metal strip over the top... Which I guess could be not on tight enough, but in no expert. As for the thermal grease, i just used the stock TT stuff. But i highly doubt that it could have that big of an affect on the temps. could it?

If you have AS5 take off the cooler, use isopropryl alcohol to remove the old thermal grease from the cpu & heatsink. Apply a dot (approx size 1.5 grains uncooked rice). If you don't have any spend $5 and order some :

1255 newegg revies, 5 eggs (that should tell you something)

It can make a big difference, also if you use too much can make a diff (bad)

Here is the as5 app guide:
