Life After Asus?!

Thread Starter
Its been a couple months since ive been around but i need some help guys! Im thinking about leaving asus due to all the frustration i have had dealing with their Conroe motherboards. Ive pretty much only ever used Asus... sure i buy gigabit and msi stuff for other ppl but for my personal gaming rigs its ALways been Asus. but ever since my P5GD2 Deluxe i have been dissatisfied with the boards. Iv bought a few since then thinking id just "wait it out" and soon asus would give me good reason to reaffirm my fan boy status... So far that hasn't been the case.

I have 2 P5W DH Deluxe/e6600 builds at the moment, I built the first a while ago with a Pent D 915 in it... 2g of ddr2 800 evga 7900. this build was a pain in the ass what with the horrible raid driver issue and undocumented "PEG" but after getting it worked out is been real solid... an e6600 upgrade later and it screams... All the while ive been stewing about how horribly slow asus driver downloads are... 2 hours to get my sound drivers?! ***?! ("Maybe asus is slipping", i think to myself)

I purchased a Mitisubishi HD projector and was running it with my first P5W build... however i always intended to have a standalone HTPC/Spare gaming rig so i set out to build an other e6600 rig...

I started with a P5B totally clueless about its lack of raid support and totally useless SPDIF. Hours of hair pulling and cursing at the slow asus website ended in a refund RMA to newegg (even covering shipping ftw!) At this point I was dreading another session of asus website head aches and was kinda pissed at asus for their lack of documentation and at who ever decided the P5Bs set of features was a good idea (cause it wasnt!!) but after weighing my options i decided to go with another P5W mainly cause i knew the sound card would do what i wanted it to do and my first one had treated me fairly well once it was up and running (Damn "PEG Link" bullcrap )

The p5w comes and will not post... ("did i drop this cpu?" i ask myself) hours of part swapping with my other rig ensues... both sets of parts work totally interchangeably with no issues except the new MB.. off it goes to newegg... replacement comes... xp fails to install a couple time ?***? but ends up install fine the 3rd time i attempted...slow ass drivers pages... finally watching HD rips on the projector and ownin down dust2 when a buddy comes over... all good right?? Wrong!

After a few weeks i notice the rig has inexplicably restarted itself while i was away... It starts happening while im using the rig... I turn the auto restart setting off and low and behold its BSoD every couple of minutes now... I have swapped every single part in to my other rig one at a time and all together... Im totally convinced its the MOBO and am pissed...

I just dont think i can get another Asus board at this point...

What i want is, first to express my frustraion... thanx guys for listening... second i want a mobo for my e6600/2x512 ddr2 10066/evga 7800gt/sata barracuda raid 0/projector HTPC rig. Its gotta have optical audio out and not be broken... I dont even care if i can get into the bios just as long as it boots and runs forever...

Can you guys help me out b4 i rma for another P5W and continue shooting myself in my already bloody foot?

Thanks for reading my 10page post felt good to post my woes!

One sec and I'll have two motherboard options for you

DFI INFINITY P965-S
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813136034

MSI P6N SLI-FI
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130082

Both are great overclockers, stable boards with your requirements met

Why blame ASUS, their site isn't the best... but they make gread products.

So you got a dead motherboard from them, that happens with every company...

and my P5W DH was easy to setup for raid0 and everything else.

Also seems you should have done more research before buying the P5B if it isn't waht you wanted...

I have ALWAYS been a fan of asus and so far they have not done me wrong. BUt then again I always had their midrange-highend products so...

I doubt that it's YOU who is unlucky, but I have no experience with the P5W or P5B boards, only with the 650i and NF4 boards.
Try the P5NE-SLI, no issues whatsoever exept the ones i caused, and 500FSB is a walk in the park for about 80% of them.

(fried my old one with static...)

Thanx for the replys guys! the P5B was totally my bad... and ive been banking on "but they make great products" for a couple years now and have been having issues... you didint find that the P5w CD including ICH8R drivers a bit weak?!? PEG link OCing my GFX card when set to disable makes my evga superclock totally unstable... I have to set peg link to fast and use rivatuner to underclock back to stock...

Thanks for the links Penicilyn and everyone... which one would you say has the bigger user base?

Which flavor of the P5N is real werd? Thnking back to my P5B vanilla debocal...

hmm, strange that u guys are having problems, however I must admit the P5B seems pretty stripped down but thats what you get its not their high end board.. i did get RAID working on the P5B vanilla however, and u can check my post on how to do it

ive been using ASUS forever and ill probably never switch... i made the mistake of switching to the DS3 and i went through 3 boards due to the cold boot issue...

Last 6 or 7 boards I've used for personal builds have been ASUS from P5LD2 to P5B Dlx WiFi and I will say they absolutely take a beating.

I've done more stupid **** to my P5B Dlx than I care to mention and it just won't give up.

The P5W DH was always a quirky board and wasn't really designed for C2Ds. Yes, they work, but I'm sure a lot of people out there are still have minor issues with them.

Don't give up on ASUS man, even though the grass may look greener on the other side, trust me it isn't.

While I run an Abit board in my sig rig now, it has given me problems and I'm still fighting with Abit's RMA department. When it works, it's insanely fast......but when it won't POST I want to smash it against the wall.

In my opinion you can't go wrong with a P5B Dlx.

I've done builds for friends with DS3s and Tforce965PTs, by far the P5B Dlx is the most user friendly (and indestructable) board around. Even though i don't use mine in my sig rig anymore, you'd have to pry it from my dead body if you wanted to get it away from me.

Make sure you update the BIOS on all your boards, an ill-developed BIOS can wreak havok; even at the OS level. I've used ABIT boards in the past and was pleased with the quality and detail put into its features, made for a well-polished end-product.

I had an AW8-MAX for about two years and expericenced no problems. Recently upgraded to this Striker Extreme and although it does provide a good foundation, I have been plagued by one issue; I am unable to use 4GB of memory in a 64bit OS, a problem which I do think is 680i related.
