WIN $3000 if you can defeat Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel at Computex - Page 9

First of all- To anyone saying Fatal1ty is a pioneer, you're DEAD WRONG. My boy Dennis Fong was. Rep to the guy up top that mentioned him. I met him in Irvine and was cool with him for a few. He went to school with my friend's older brother.

He played a Quake 3 Tournament here in California and he won John Carmack's Ferrari. Just adding details to what someone said up top. John Carmack said he would meet, shake the hand and give his Ferrari to whoever won that tournament. Dennis SMOKED the other guy, and it had preliminaries and everything, so he pretty much destroyed a guy that went through as many brackets as him. He was a railgun headshot specialist. The other guy even had a negative score because Dennis shot him off a platform. It's really hard to pull stunts like that on a pro.

Dennis Fong was what Fatal1ty can only dream of being. Fatal1ty's good, but he's no pioneer. He's like what Lebron James is to Michael Jordon. Michael Jordon didn't make as much money in advertising as Lebron James has, does that mean LJ is a better basketball player than him? Hell freakin' no. MJ was here first, revolutionized basketball and gave pro ball its mark. Dennis Fong did the same thing, that's why VETERAN gamers know his name.

The only reason. The ONLY reason Fatal1ty is making this much money, is because of Google/Youtube videos. He beat a German pro gamer at some FPS game I never even heard of and everyone was going ape crap over him because the video was all over. But don't dare call him the first pro gamer. He wasn't. He's just the first to mix it with marketing, but since when is that a major accomplishment?

He's the pioneer of nothing. Not pro gaming and not marketing, so yes, he's over-rated. The only reason you guys only know about him and not Dennis Fong is because you guys are young and weren't around gaming back when Dennis was winning.

And what's with everyone calling people haters? What are you, one of Fatal1ty's girlfriends or his mom? People have a right to their opinion and he really is over-rated. He's not good at anything but FPS games. Put him in the room with a veteran Madden gamer, a veteran Korean Starcraft gamer, a veteran MMO guild member in PVP or a GT guru in Gran Turismo.

Why should we respect someone who just looked for another way to rip off newbie computer hardware enthusiasts? Tell me, if I made a Jack Bauer edition of 8800GTX cards that was $75 more than a regular GTX and used the exact same core speed/memory clock and just had a sticker of Kiefer Sutherland on it, would you really idolize me? Or Kiefer Sutherland? Jokes aside, no, you wouldn't. You'd be angry that I'm throwing a product out there to trick people into thinking it's more enthusiast quality than regular products.

Honestly, what you guys are saying about Fatal1ty, completely contradicts the reason for forums like this to exist and people like us to discuss hardware. We're supposed to find the rip-offs on the market and black ball them, you guys are commending them and calling the maker and advertiser of them a hero/pioneer?

Yeah, we should commend the Nvidia Engineer that came up with the FX series while we're at it. Why don't we go by the guy's house that came up with the 8800 Ultra and give him a Thank You cake while we're at it? Hey, now that I think about it, we owe Zalman a "Good Job" card for the Fatal1ty case that's $150 more than the regular one.

All Fatal1ty products are are regular versions of the product with his name on it and a 10-15% mark up. I can't even believe you guys are idolizing this guy and criticizing people that know what he really is. What has this forum come to?

How would you know? You've barely been here yourself?

I wasn't callin' him a hero for pioneering. However, he is doing what he loves to do and making money off of it. Calling him a loser or saying he's wasting his life playing video games for a living?

How's that not hating? Me confused.

No, that's not what was going on.

People were saying there's nothing special about what he does.

The bottom line is, anyone that says how he became rich was genius or intellectual related rather than plain dumb luck, would be about 2 cans short of a complete 6 pack of ignoramus soda.

He got lucky. No, there's no argument about it. He got lucky.

There is no rap artist, celebrity, actor or anything like that that I will say got where they are all because of skill/intelligence/dedication. It takes more luck than anything. You're lucky that one executive picked you, you're lucky that one talent scout picked you, you're lucky you were at the right tournament where companies were looking for sponsor flags.

He got lucky. There are a LOT of gamers better than him and it's not like he went out with the idea of doing what he does. Zalman, Cooler Master, Power Color, ABIT... Those companies went to HIM, not the other way around.

He got lucky because someone put his video on Youtube/Google, he had rolling recognition to computer gamers, and hardware manufacturers noticed it and seized the moment before it was gone. Marketing is the answer to his fame, and it could've been ANYONE other than him.

The only time you give credit to someone, is when someone is so uniquely good to it, they DESERVE recognition. That's what Jordan was, because not just every day basketball player was as good as him. He was good at EVERYTHING basketball related, teamwork, defense, shooting, dunking, leading, point guarding, ball control and all. He was a unique face.

Any gamer with a Google video and above 90% sniping accuracy and a tournament win could've been Fatal1ty. He was just at the right place at the right time. Anyone that even dares to deny that, doesn't know anything about this issue.

Wow nameless, do you ever post anything positive instead of trying to tear things down?

Regardless of how good Fatal1ty is or is not, he's made something for himself that I doubt very many on these boards would turn down. He's taken something that he enjoys doing and has made at the very least, a short term career out of it. If he's financially smart, he's set for life. Should we castigate Michael Jordan because nike sold shoes with his name on them for ridiculous amounts of money or any of the other people who have been used to promote overpriced merchandise? If you're stupid enough to buy something just because a celebrities name is on them it's your own fault, don't blame the celebrity. If people like Fong, Fatal1ty and others can help move computer gaming more into the spotlight and reduce the perception that it's just for geeks, nerds and people with no life shouldn't we be happy?

So, when/if you make it big by posting your video cam movie on YouTube, should we discredit you because everyone else did it as well? Say you got lucky by traveling at the heels of TRUE web pioneers and cowboys/girls?

In fact, your entire post was irrelevant to what anyone's been saying. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY is praising the fact that he's endorsed, but rather the fact that he's getting PAID TO PLAY. You're conjuring an argument on product endorsement where it doesn't exist. Every negative comment aimed at this guy was based on his personal life, as a human being, and that he's being a loser by wasting away... making MONEY while playing video games.

So yeah, the flames aimed at him were pretty much haters being haters.

Wow, clearly you didn't read my post at all. Good job.

Let me make my argument simple so you can not avoid my point:

Should we commend and idolize people that win the lottery?

You're giving credit to the wrong people. The marketing manager that first decided to sponsor Fatal1ty and make "Fatal1ty" branded products is the person that deserves credit, NOT Johnathan Wendel. He's a pawn.

And no, it's not bashing or "player hating lol GGGG G UNIT!". It's the truth. It's not my fault the truth tastes bad, you're the one who hasn't swallowed it yet.

But, you're the only one in this thread arguing for the sake of marketing's purity. Nobody else is concerned with the marketing part... if you read the thread through like you tell everyone else.

As I said, all of the negative comments are directly aimed at his integrity as a human being. Simply because he plays video games for a living... that's not hard to see.

Also, Id buy an 8800GTX with Kiefer SUtherland on it XD -- but what namless said is all right guys - Fatali**** isnt much but a good FPS player with some marketing skills and big money behind him now (3-4 years ago he wasnt anything but a kid that won some money in a ut2k3 tourney, now abit/nvid/other misc PC part corporations put his goddamn name on everything from mobos to cases to coolers to video cards - and its the same product, just different colours, sometimes stupid lights, and maybe some different stickers. He is the ricer of PC parts guys, you must realize this.

This is just your average ordinary hardcore gamer that was lucky enough to get a contract, I don't get the difference in why people should get $3000 when you can get some delight out of winning.
