Many linux questions...

Thread Starter
So I am officially making the total move, I am dropping Microshi..soft Winblows completely and going all out into linux. I am planning on going with Ubuntu Studio probably because it has what I want, music software and graphics. I know I cannot game a lot but I do want to try to get 3d working on my ATI video card which I know is possible, I have seen a lot of benchmarks around.

So here are my questions that I have

1) How can I get to run in 3D mode with my ATI Radeon x850xt (AGP)?
2) Can I run at 1280x1024 resolution with 100Hz?
3) What games can I play? (AA, WC3?)
4) Is there any version of Cedega for free or should I just pay since its cheap?

If there is any recommendations, please do not hesitate to state them

Edit:
Thank you for all of your help everybody and I have sucessfully gotten everything to work on my computer

If U studio is based off of feisty (probably) there is a restricted driver manager that will help you install the ATi drivers for #1/2
I dunno the full game list - wiki can help you there
Cedega is the non-free version of wine that's optimized for gaming. I'd say pay for it. You payed how much for windows?

I thought you could get Cedega free if you compiled it from source or something. Chipp and drummer4lifex told me something about it awhile back.

What would be the point of that? What linux user would pay a monthly fee for the privilege of getting it in a package.

yes you can get ati drivers to work.. even with the restriced drivers its a PIA and good luck getting beryl to work with them.. i believe you want to do something like

sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-frglx

dont bother wasting your time searching synaptic for ATI you will get a ton of stuff and it wont be what you need.. dont bother installing the frglx-control either unless you are running dual moniter its pretty much worthless at this point and rumured to still be buggy .. from what ive seen the restricted drivers wont support beryl either .. something to do with the compsite support and DRI .. if you search around youll find a way to use the open source drivers and a couple of xorg.conf tweaks to get beryl up and running and if thats running you can be pretty sure that youll have some opengl 3d stuff ... remember.. the ubuntu forums is a nice place to search .. and irc.freenode.com #ubuntu is a great room to get help in as well... as far as the games.. i dont game on my pc thats why i have a 360..

as far as the resolution yes you can force it into that .. you will have to edit your your xorg.conf file and put it under the resolutions you cant miss that section as far as the refresh im not sure about that part..

To install the driver
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...allation_Guide
You can also try using the radeon driver (the open source driver) since I think it will be able to provide 3D support for that particular card; be aware that performance with this driver is crappy (but hey, you can use AIGLX ).

Once you install the driver, you should be able to select all resolutions and refresh rates that your monitor supports (provided Ubuntu correctly detected your monitor). If not, you will have to force the values by way of your xorg.conf file (sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf). You can possibly damage your hardware this way, so it's best if you know its exact specifications and capabilities.

Most games (the ones that are Linux friendly at least) can run in some manner under Wine. Wine is free, but it's not optimized towards games like Cedega is (both programs are basically the same anyways). Check the Wine database (it seems to be down at the moment) for compatible games. You can pay for Cedega, but chances are that if a game does not work in Wine, it will at most have limited functionality in Cedega.

xorg.conf configuration:
This is a basic guide I found for configuring the monitor sections http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO.../x-config.html
You can also try using "modelines", which tell your xorg.conf file the exact display modes you want to use. Just use this to generate a modeline, and add the code to the monitor section of the xorg.conf file.

Wow, did not expect that many answers. Seems like linux is growing.

Thanks so much guys, I might just wait a few more days and pick up a nice XFX 7900 extreme so I do not have to deal with the whole ATI fiasco.

ATI drivers in Linux are not that bad, really. I run ATI cards on all my Linux boxes and I have always had at the very least 90% success rate with fglrx (most of the faults were due to my own clumsiness in Linux). Nvidia drivers have their own faults, and are in no way perfect either.

um... i would disagree i have NEVER had any problems what so ever with the use of nvidia drivers.. its as simple as installing the package and restarting the x server.. you might have to change the nv to nvida .. or nvidia to nv in the xorg.conf then hit alt-ctrl-bcksp ... but everything worked right out of the box and its just so so so much better.. and the control panal ive seen for nivida perfect as well from my point of view.. same options as you would find under the windows version

Cedega alternatives , vmware , win4lin , crossover , wine.
For a game list , check http://icculus.org/lgfaq/gamelist.php .

Try wine first , runs steam , BF2 , WOW , Command n conquer 3 . They have a huge developer database.
