Do I just suck at installing CPUs/HSFs?

Even going back to installing athlon xp2600's(cause I had one that was suppose to overclock well) I have had problems with high temps. I have changed cases, added fans, bought new heatsinks, etc, but I still seem to be cursed.

Case in point. I bought a EVGA 680i motherboard, a Pentium D 940 chip and a retail CPU fan. It was running around 52idle and 65 under load. So I got a Glacialtech Igloo 5700(I didn't want to spend TOO much money, but damn I wanted better cooling)

Then it ran 48 idle and around 62 under load, ALL AT STOCK speeds.

So I said screw it. I got a Cooler Master 330 elite case, Big Typhoon VX and some AS5 paste.

I put it all together last night with an ambient temp of 20C for all tests and I am getting 40 idle and 56 under Orthos for like 30minutes.

Why can't I get the low temps that people are always talking about. With a load of 56 there is no way I can overclock this thing as my load temps will be way over 60.

plus the 940 is just fricking HOT

you only need a tiny dot of AS5, and let it burn in a day to two

I did the whole grain of rice thing.

I put the sink on and then realized I had to take it off so I could put my power supply back in. When I took it off I noticed the right side of the CPU didn't have any paste on it....so I applied just a little more near the right side before replacing the cpu.

The push pin clips suck and you can't really get a tight seal so I don't think it spread the AS5 enough the first time. I am pretty sure now the CPU is completely covered, but do I maybe have too much AS5? I mean its better to have just a little more than a little less, right?

So its possible my temps could come down as the paste "burns in"?

Yes, error on the side of too much rather than too little.

I think you would have been happier if you would have gotten a Core 2 Duo, they run much much cooler. Don't know if you have got any cash for it, but it would be a huge difference in temps.

No turns out I just bought this setup. I got it from a local TigerDirect outlet store and they had the Core 2's for $178(while newegg had them for $115, which I didn't know at the time) So I ended up with the D940 for $95

Huh, happy with C2D's eh? I got an e6300 with stock cooling in a room that is 24 ambient, and my cpu runs at 55 degrees C. And I know for sure the heatsink is on. So I am NOT happy with mine.
