Ahhhhhhh Help

Thread Starter
okay, so ya'll saw my other thread HERE and I JUST blew out all dust, removed the thermal paste and just applied some arctic silver 5, re-installed the heatsink/fan and booted it up long enough to see 113 degrees C in the BIOS before my processor safety shut down before it fries. What the hell is going wrong??! I am royally getting pissed off. It seems like the heatsink will only securely click in on one side, and if I force the other side down, it kicks the other side up a tiny bit, but not by a huge amount. all 4 clips can be seen on the underside of the motherboard. any ideas?? Thanks guys

Could you show us a picture of the bottom of the heatsink? did you use pure alcohol or something close to get rid of all the old heatsink material.

Is the CPU seated in the socket properly? Are you using the right retention clips for the heatsink?

I haven't touched the CPU since I first built the computer a year and half ago and its the stock heatsink/fan that came with the processor, so the clips aren't whats wrong I dont think

EDIT:
okay, so I held the heatsink/fan down tight with my fingers and booted it and read 60 degrees C in the bios, slowly began letting my hands off and at rose to the 100 degrees C that I was reading before, so its definitely the heatsink mounting to the motherboard...

At the temperatures you're reaching, I think the heatpipes stop working. Which means your CPU will burn up like there is no heatsink attached (and 100+ degrees is pretty much bare CPU temps).

Show us pictures of the top and bottom of the CPU/fan clips. Also, is the heatsink damaged in any way?

SUCCESS!!!!!!

i swear my motherboard was gonna snap into pieces while standing on that heatsink to screw it in

standing on the heat sink??

is it a LGA775 cpu? If so those stock heat sinks from Intel are crap! you have to be very careful when you remove it or you WILL screw up the little cheap @ss plastic clip things that hold it to the motherboard....

spend 40-50 bucks on a good after market zalman heatsink... or let the other guys here point you in the direction of a cheaper sink... with probably the same performance...

Sorry its been awhile since i've been on the cpu/fan/heatsink market... I've been water cooled for a few years....
good enough
