VERY strange problem

Thread Starter
Someone linked me to something in another forum, and like a lot of times, the page wouldn't load for me.

I was frustrated with this (happens a LOT) and decided to try something radical.

The site was a page at http://www.ncix.com ----> This will not load. If I type in http://www.ncix.com - - - - won't load, 404, do not pass go.

But! (here's why it's strange):

http://ncix.com loads just fine. Typed exactly like that.

Other pages work great with www. prefixes, what is wrong with this one and others?

ok, here's a possible solution, in fact, i think it is the only solution, however i may be wrong...

on the DNS that your connection is using there is no association for the name http://www.ncix.com, however there is an association to http://ncix.com - the DNS associates a name to an IP thereby taking you to the correct site...

does this help?

I don't know why it happens, but it is the same for my website. When I type http://robinbatteau.com, it works, but http://www.robinbatteau.com, nothing.

Well, I have vonage and I thought maybe it was the Vonage modem at first, but I'm starting to think it's this cable modem I have.

At random, sites just will not work. And last night, www.ncix.com started working out of the blue. I don't know what's going on, I can ping every site just won't work, but then it will work again in an hour or two, then it won't, it's starting to annoy the piss out of me.

edit: and opendns.com won't freakin' load :'(

Just got off with my internet company, they say everything is good to go with the modem, but when they ping my IP they get 343ms average, which tells them something is delaying the reaction.

Doesn't take a genius to figure out that it can't ping my computer, and if the modem is fine, that reeks of a bad server/router somewhere in the line of Charter's services.

Run "tracert www.ncix.com" on a command line. It will tell you how long it takes each step to get to www.ncix.com.

Well, I don't know why I didn't think of this before, but having problems with web pages because of the web address in a browser = DNS problem.

I called my ISP today, after trying all morning to figure out what the problem was, and BEHOLD! They have no clue what the problem is either, the guy said "That sounds like a DNS problem, but all looks good for your area. I can try something though *insert long convo regarding specified DNS servers vs. Auto-obtained DNS servers*"

I enter the specified DNS servers and I can visit pages just fine now hahaha.

Go figure.
