Overclock questions for noob

Thread Starter
Yo Guys! Im a little bit new to overclocking your systemss.. I need someone to explain it to me clearly.. Dont worry Im a fast learner .. My question is if you have for example: Athlon X2 3800+ 2.0 Ghz stock settings and you want to overclock it to 3.0Ghz, Where do you get that 1Ghz to make 2.0 to 3.0Ghz??

Core speed equals FSB*Multiplier
Drop the multiplier a bit and bump up the FSB to find max NB speed
Increase multiplier to find max core speed
Adjust RAM spee/ timings as needed
If you need to increase voltage, just keep load temps below ~60c

Hate to burst your bubble, but you won't get 3.0 GHz on our CPU with air. Maybe on chilled water cooling or phase change. You will need a HUGE amount of VCore. Try these settings first:
CPU Multiplier: 7X
HT multiplier: 3X
VCore: 1.40V
HT freq.: 240----try to find your max first. Keep moving up in 10 MHz intervals until you fail Orthos small FFT test. When you find it move the multi to 10X and find your max CPU. In the end the best OC is the higher HT frequency met with a lower multiplier.

I am running 7.748 with these settings:
HT freq: 305
HTV:1.400V
CPU Multi: 9X
VCore: 1.500
HT multiplier: 3X (in my BIOS it's done by frequency, 600MHz, ends up being 925 after OC)_
DDRV:2.9
Memclock: DDR333 (with 9x CPU multi this makes my divider CPU/11)
effective DDR freq: 250 MHz

Hope this helps. PM me if you have ?s

It's possible on air. Maybe not stock air, but definitely possible on good air.

When people want to get to 3GHz, it's usually not temps that limit them, it's their motherboard or other things.

no, there is NO WAY to get 3.0 GHz on good air, great air, whatever with a 3800+ X2. Trust me. You might be able to boot with a MASSIVE amount of VCore, but you will damage your CPU from the excessive heat.
Check this site. It has cooling type, clocks, and stability:

erm no.

3ghz is possible dude, dont say its not just because you dont think its possible.

just search on these forums and you will find out

might be a bit of scare-mongering there - I'm sure it is possible to hit 3ghz, but it will be very rare. Mine wont go above 2.75ghz without massive volts and thanks to getting a thermonuclear reactor...I mean LDBFE...I cant run that kind of voltage so mine is capped at 2.6ghz

It's possible to POST at 3 GHz with a 3800+ X2, but I gurantee it won't be stable. I've never seen one on this forum past 2.75 on air, or XtremeSystems for that matter. Did you look at that link? All of the 3 GHz's on air were only POST/OS load stable.
I am speaking in terms of everyday use. For 3GHz on my CPU you need at least water cooling, possibly TEC water loop or phase.
