Yes, I'm a quitter.

And just so everyone knows what I'm upgrading from...

Speakers: Creative 2.1 T3030: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16836116007
Sound Card: Onboard (Lame...)
Headphones: Sony MDR-7505: http://www.music123.com/Sony-MDR7505-i78997.music
Something does not sound right about that, your sound card has no effect on what bitrate you rip at.

I met my sound card will only be able to play at 192KbPs, and why rip music at a faster bit rate than I can play it, right?

the sample rate (kHz) has nothing to do with the bit rate (kbps) something is encoded in

Let me add my 2 cents to this thread. I've seem decent suggestions and some not so decent ones. First of all, listen to Jimmy2Shoe, Chipp, soloz2 and Rakukojin. They know what they're talking about.

Now, at the risk of being flamed, I am going to add something here. I do not consider the A500, A700 or A900 to be as good as they are made out to be. Are they decent? Yeah, they are. Are they better than bose headphones and most sony headphones? Again, yeah.

But they are not spectacular by any stretch. They have a rather honky midrange that is very noticeably recessed, coupled with pretty loose and uncontrolled bass with little impact that tends to smear the lower mids, and the highs sound rather artificial. They do have a rather nice soundstage, but imaging is sub par. They are good for gaming but I would not recommend them for anything else. The Sennheiser HD555 and HD595 fall into this same general category in my book as well.

I would recommend the Alessandro MS-1, Grado SR-80, Goldring DR150, Stax SR-001, AKG K501, Sennheiser HD580, Beyerdynamic DT880 & 990 etc... It depends on what kind of music you intend to listen to. Speaking of which, what kind of music DO you listen to? Also how much if anything are you planning to spend on amplification?

As for speakers, I have not seen these suggested yet. The Swan M200s. They are not super high end but sound half decent and are a good bang for the buck:

A little larger and more expensive, these seem to have great initial impressions:

Now if you want to get cheap:
http://www.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=184546

As for a sound card, I would suggest an E-MU 0404, 1212m, ESI Juli@ or M-Audio Audiophile 192. The modded X-fi seems to be getting good impressions as well.

I just pulled the trigger on a cheap little DAC (soundcard) called the Fubar II by Firestone Audio, to replace my aging Xitel...

I guess the point I'm making is be carful; once you get into hifi it's a story of constant improvement.

And a little personal tip: if you find something that's only slightly over budget but you feel it's substantially better, go for it. Otherwise you'll forever feel bad about the compromise you initially decided upon.

Anyway, that's pretty much it... for now. I don't think I can help much more regarding headphones and active speakers, just not my strength.

Cheers,

Jimmy

Dude, get two of these ($100 bucks a piece), and this amp. It's not the most accurate "audiophile-approved" setup , but the sheer presence, power, and loudness of these speakers make up for it.

Meh..... I love my pro stuff, don't get me wrong, but he said he's looking to become an audiophile. DJ cabs won't quite accomplish that quest, if you know what I mean.

Yeah I know, but it's just so loud and full (I've got four of those cabs)

ehh... I'd take SQ over volume any day!!! Even back in high school all my friends had all their $$ into subs (car audio) I too had a system, but it was invested into higher end components for better SQ and not so much SPL
