Looking to become an audiophile this summer - Page 10

Though I'm not 100% familiar with PC gaming, I'd bet good money that a GOOD speaker set (5.1) would woop any type of headphones in terms of surround sound effect... though truth is, you'll pay alot more too.

I used to play some X360 in our family's entertainment room, and Call of Duty 3 was pretty amazing.

Assuming we are in fact talking about GOOD 5.1 speakers (those exist?), then I would agree. I will also add that GOOD stereo speakers in a proper listening room with the correct room acoustics will give you the absolute most realistic sound experience, in terms of soundstage, imaging and everything. We hear with two ears people, not 5 ears plus a big one for bass.

If you could get a room with good sonics and had a hi-fi home theater surround sound setup, with correct speaker placement then you might get better results gaming, but it would cost thousands of $ to reach this.

However, a good pair of cans paired with an amp and an X-fi will give you almost as good positional audio for about 10x less

Even if you do this:
mod an X-fi: roughly $100
build a PIMETA: roughly $100
Beyer DT770 Pro/80: $200
add your choice of IC between X-fi and amp: $50
total of $450 for a gaming setup similar to what I use, and it beats the logitech 5.1 setup I previously had. (Granted if you pay someone to build everything for you plan to pay more, or if you build it yourself you can do it even cheaper )

Have you listened to some good headphones with CMSS-3D from an X-Fi in, say, BF2?

I said GOOD speaker setup. Not computer speaker setup. Actual, high quality speakers with a HT receiver.

003's statement makes no sense to me anyways, at any given time there is sound in front of you to the left, to the right... right now my window behind me is open, I hear birds chirping.

How would 2 speakers in front of me give me perfect reproduction of a sound behind me? I've heard of good soundstaging and imaging, but thats' crazy.

It might sound crazy but it's true. Why are all the super high end stereos, well, stereo? Granted with soundstage and imaging on speakers, room acoustics mess it up a LOT, so if you are listening in a room that has poor acoustics the soundstage and imaging and other aspects of the sound won't be correct. "surround sound" became popular because it defeats the problem of room acoustics, by forcing the sound to come from all around you, but it does NOT sound as good as the best 2 channel stereo (at least for music, SS may be preferable for movies, they are recorded differently), I am very busy and have to go now, I will try to explain more and give some links when I get home today.

Personally, I disagree. My stereo setup is nearing 3500$ in total expenses (just bought some new speakers ), and I've had the pleasure of hearing some stereos costing nearly 10x that price... the soundstage is great, and you really DO feel like you're right there in the middle of the action, but that doesn't mean that it's more realistic than 5.1... in terms of movie and game soundtracks that were initially recorded in 5.1

My opinion, to take or leave.

Edit, just re-read your post and it looks like you said that music is best heard when being played by a high quality 2 speaker stereo, which I agree. However, for 5.1 content, a 5.1 speaker system is best. I don't buy into the DVD-A stuff that has been released, it does sound un-natural. Movie soundtracks in 5.1 however, can only be properly reproduced when there actually ARE 5.1 speakers in the room.
