so i boot from slackware install cd, boot using bare.i cause i have IDE drives (also tried sata.i makes NO difference)

and then login prompt comes

i login to root

then i type "fdisk /dev/hda" cause i have one IDE drive.

cant find drive.

i realize that since i have 4 sata ports, "IDE"0-3 is sata single channel, and IDE 4 is the IDE channel (only one on mobo)

so i thought

hda=ide0, hdb=ide1, hdc=ide2, hdd=ide3, hde=ide4 master, hdf ide4slave

so i try hde no luck

then i do cfdisk, which auto detects all drives, and....

NOTHING

then i type ***

then i type ****

then i type reboot, and now i am here

You need to mount the drives first...

Try running "lspci". It will show you all hardware connected to the motherboard, ans should include your hard drives.

Also note that you need to mount the drive before you can format it, so type:

mkdir /mnt/hda1
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1

Thats just an example, edit accordingly based on your drives and where you wish to mount to. You'll have to create the directory before you can mount a drive to there.

To imply that I'm something other than a noob is flattering. I just finished breaking Gentoo last night. I neglected to rebuild dependencies after a world upgrade, and basically screwed portage up.
