1x8800GTS or 2x x1950xt's ? no DX10...

Thread Starter
Since RAM and CPU's are so cheap nowadays, I have been thinking of building a new mostly budget rig until I finish truck, and can build a good rig. Hopefully by then, DX10 will be going nice and well. ANyway, I have been thinking of going with either 2x x1950xt's in crossfire, OR 1x 8800GTS... either set-up would run about the same price, with the xt's being slightly cheaper. Since I dont plan on getting vista anytime soon, (so no DX10), what would be the better setup? Also, FYI the processor I've been thinking about is the Xeon 3060, w/ 4G of DDR800(damn this stuff is dirt cheap). When I built my current rig 2 years ago I spent like $200 less than what it would cost for this whole setup...I feel almost as bad as when I bought a Gateway with 1.5ghz P4 in it for $1600...this new setup is like $600 even cheaper than that!

I'd still get the GTS myself, you can later SLI them if you want. It's an insane overclocker and you still have the DX10 later if you want

go w/ a true c2d for one, not a conroe based xenon, they are cheaper. and get a 8800gts, the GTS out performs the 2 XTs and i believe teh GTS woulduse less power.

The GTS does not outperform 2x 1950xt, the GTX does.

If you truely did not care about dx10, get the x1950's. However keep in mind with the XT you will need one XT and one crossfire edition card, you cannot run two XT's together. The crossfire editions usually run for around the same price as an XTX from what I remember.

I think the 8800gts is just a better idea overall, and you don't have to mess with setting up crossfire. You may want dx10 later.

The 1950's will be faster. If that's your only concern go for it.

This will give you an idea about master card price and it's a big humorous.

I'd get the 8800. Two X1950xt would take in alot of power and produce alot of heat. One 8800 can beat two X1950xt's.

With the X1950's you DO indeed need a mastercard. That indeed destroys the price advantage.

It's the X1950PRO that can run SLI with the internal bridge.
http://ati.amd.com/technology/crossfire/charts.html

My vote goes also to the 8800GTS.

I have one now (the 640MB version), and I have beaten my former rig that had X1900's in Crossfire (similar CPU/RAM settings with a slight advantage to the Crossfire rig)
