Intel Confidential ES Pentium D?

Thread Starter
sooo... in my thread talking about Geforce 8600gts + Pentium 4 for Geforce 7900GT + Pentium D, my uncle gave me this CPU that reads

INTEL CONFIDENTIAL
QJYX ES MALAY
i (H)(C)'05 HH80553PG0964M
L534B169

my uncle says this is an engineering sample CPU and he says its a Pentium D 3.4Ghz....

anybody know the advantages and disadvantages of an engineering sample?

I was browsing around and some people said they have their multipliers unlocked? thats supposed to be good? then i read somewhere that ES CPUs have bugs and they're not so great... so whats up with these ES cpus?

by the way... i don't really know jack about overclocking...

thanks =]

in theory they are cream of the crop cpu, kinda hand picked to be sent to reviews and partners. The multi's are usually unlocked making OC'ing them much easier, you no longer have to worry as much about your mobo limiting speed due to a low fsb

I once had a Pentium D 950 ES and it was only marginaly better than the retail version I had.

Some ES chips are full unlocked multis, some aren't

As with any other processor, there's no way to tell how good it actually is until you fire it up and start trying to OC.

Pentium D 9xx series run insanely hot though, so if you plan to OC at all you better get some high end cooling. Water would be your best bet. Even my 950 ES under water still idled around 40C and load would go to the mid 50's (1.52vcore @ 4.5ghz)

If i don't plan on doing any overclocking... is there really any advantages of an ES... or are they disadvantages... I'm just seeing if i can actually keep this thing working for at least 2 years...

Some ES are better than others. My 6700 ES,is been nice with me but love the juice in volt's.And some chips really have unlocked multy, but no all of them.Mine don't have unlocked multy. But if your have the unlocked multy you have a good chip in hands.

ES are cherry picked from the line and are of the highest quality.

wrong, they are Engineering samples used for testing, nothing more

Depending on what tests your particular chip went through it may end up being worse than a retail
