Well the Nforce 4 and 5 sucked but the 680i is pretty nice...OCs as good as a 975 chipset.
Very nice!

So the top dog of the chip biz is cozying up to the top dog of the gfx biz and the underdog of the chip biz bought out the underdog of the gfx biz. Where does that leave us? Top top dog vs. under under dog? Yikes. Sounds scary. Can't even follow that math. Two wrongs don't make a right?!?! Given the recent high popularity of G80 cards and Core chips, this is going to be tough on AMD/ATI.

gah..

AMD/nVidia make a much better combo imo.

Intlel/ATI is how it should be.

Please tell me you're/'ve using/used one? I'm not entirely sold on this whole 'Intel is best' talk. Yes, their P965 can hit very high FSB... who really cares about a 600FSB upper limit? Benchmarkers, that's it. Even on the E6300 540ish is all you need to hit 3.8GHz. This is at the cost of, ****ty "lane-ature", fewer features, unpredictable behavior. All I own are Intel chipsets and I'm being more and more convinced that they couldn't possibly the handsdown 'the best' unless you're a parrot that only sees the max bootable FSB as the board's performance.

If nforce chipsets are so awful or so 'not as good', why are the world record 3dmarks on a 680i? Because it's a good chipset.

Umm... I think that the world's 3dmark06 record has more to do with Nvidia not allowing SLI on Intel chipsets than the performance of the chipset.

Compare single GPU performance and you will find which chipset is the best.

Haha, yeah. AMD's merge with ATi just ruined them unless Barcalona is really 50% faster than Kentsfield. If nVidia and intel work together they can make beastly computers; Quad 8800GTX and an Octo-Core Xeon... Wow.

AMD's acquisition of ATI didn't ruin them. It'll just take a bit of time for them to fully merge not just the management but the technology behind both companies. The concept of Fusion and the merger of the GPU and CPU does seem pretty logical. When that day comes, we'll see the benefits of the aquisition.

These companies are becoming one big menage a trois. Intel and AMD are sworn enemies while Nvidia is partnering up with Intel yet they also produce a lot of chipsets for AMD.

Exactly, dual card vs single card.

Also, if history hasn't taught anyone else here, just look at the nForce 4 and then 5 which were/are by far the worst crap ever released for an Intel CPU.

Not to mention that VIA and SiS pretty much gave up when they were up against all the 8xx series of Intel chispets. 865PEs pretty much bury their dreams.

nForce may have brought out the best of AMD but when it comes to Intel? Not that fortunate.

If Intel's chipset were best, they'd have that feature now wouldn't they? It doesn't matter whether or not it's nVidia's fault that they don't have it. It still doesn't have that functionality that an nVidia chipset does and therefore makes the 680i a superior chipset in that respect.

And indeed, the 8XX chipsets ruled in ALL aspects in their time.

I will never run SLI. Therefore, the only perceived benefit of an Nvidia chipset is gone. (for me)
