E6600 or E6420?

Thread Starter
The difference is about $35. I wanna overclock and I've seen the E6420 overclocks 3.2 while remaining stable. I wanna use a 400 FSB so if I were to get an E6600 It'd have to be a 3.6 ghz OC. I really don't have any experience overclocking and I want it to be as easy as possible. Would achieving 3.6 on an E6600 be much harder than achieving a 3.2 OC on an E6420? Thanks for your time.

I own a Tuniq Tower and an EVGA 680i SLI if it makes any difference.

I dont know about the 6420, but getting a stable 3.6 on the E6600 on air is possible. With the right motherboard it's not really hard at all. And if its only $35 more, I'd definitely going with that.

3.2Ghz isn't hard, and why not use an FSB a little over 400? To run 3.6Ghz you need some serious cooling, a good stepping, and low room temps.

It's usually 28°C where I live. I'm getting PC6400 RAM so I wanna go with a 400 (slowly of course)FSB using the stock multiplier without changing any other clocks and keep it 1:1. If I were do down the multiplier to 8 on the E6600 then I might as well get an E6420. If the 3.6 OC on the E6600 isn't very common I will probably will go for the E6420 given all the posts I've seen about people achieving 3.2 on it easily(Is it really that common). Thoughts?

Nah, get the 6600, that's what practically everyone is getting now, and as mike says, it's only $35 more. Plus I think you'll want the 9x multi if you're going to do some serious OCing.

A decent set of PC6400 memory with Cas latency 4 will at least overclock to 900mhz. And if it's usually 28c where you live, I'd certainly go with the E6420.

Heat shouldnt be an issue here and heres why:

The amount of vCore required to do 3.2 on the E6420 is about the same itll be to get to 3.6 on a E6600. You're still gonna have excess heat, so youre going to obviously need good after market cooling. Now again, for only $35 more, you're going to get a higher OC, via higher multiplier on the 6600.
