Inexpensive HTPC.

After a recent upgrade of my main rig I had a number of Leftover parts
from the Old rig.
The Old parts just sat there. Decided to do Something with them.
Why not build a Home Theatre rig?
Heck,,You don't need the Latest and Greatest and most Expensive
stuff for a rig for DVD playback ,and a TV Tuner card.
Paid Big bucks for these components when they were top of the line stuff,
not about to just trash them, especialy since all is in good working condition.

Old Parts Already had on hand:
AMD Athlon64 3000+ Venice, Socket 754.
MSI K8MM-V mobo.
EVGA Nvidia FX 6600GT 126mb AGPx8 video card.
Audigy LS sound card.
450w powersupply.
Altec Lansing 221 speakers.
120 Gig HD.

Needed and Now have
New midtower case. $20
1 Gig DDR400 ram, PNY $68
Win Xp OS $89
new keyboard and optical mouse combo,Microsoft,,$17
lite on DVD/CD-R combo drive $23.
All from neweggg.

All is put together and works just Great so far, got ALL of the WinXP updates,
TG for the cable modem.

Next to aquire
19 inch Widescreen LCD monitor.
TV Tuner Card.

Eventualy
a better sound card. Check out ebay for an audigy2 or 4.
maybe new 5.1 speakers too.

good job

It's an HTPC, a good GFX is not required.

Good setup, except, why didn't you get Vista Home Premuim or Media Center? And why not get a DVD -/+ RW drive, it's not that expensive.

went with XP home mostly becuase i am already familiar with it.
and its inexpensive. $90 vs $110. yeah,, I'm that much of a scrooge.
Plus my dad has a pc with xp media,,,did not notice that much of a
difference.

Vista is still too new for me,,might try it in a couple of years when it is
mature,,more software available,,more working bug free drivers ect.
I was still using dos6.22/Win3.11 when Win98SE came out.
Still used Win98SE when WinXP SP2 came out,,see my pattern?

Might get around to a dvd burner, i like the idea.
Just going to have get a dvd burner as a #2 optical drive in future.
ok you talked me into it.

went with the combo for its 52x cd-rom,,,burns cdrom @52x,,and it plays
dvd @ 16x,,
a 52x cdrom feature is GREAT for installing large programs like an OS or Huge
games that eat up lots of hd space.

I Did give thought to the idea of new video card.
However,,,I already had a good FX6600 GT on hand.
For the purpose of this HTPC, even the FX6600 GT agp is overkill.
Plus the 6600 was already paid for and all that.

I will not be useing this rig for games,or movie production, video editing or anything heavy duty, ect, ect, like that.

Just dvd movie playback or watching cable tv via a tv tuner card in a pci slot.
or playing cd music. Maybe even hook it to my cable modem now and then
for software updates if needed. Another purpose is,emergency back up rig
for my main rig.

Thats the basic idea,,main rig for games/internet,genral use,the htpc to play movies, cable tv, or music while doing something on the main or whatever.
