if that is what you ISP said, then they lied to you

for example my cousin was on the phone with the tech support of the ISP and he his ISP told him to plug and unplug his ethernet cable for an hour to "fix the problem"

go to command console, type 'ipconfig /all' , get the number from the Default Gateway, put that IP into your web browser. Look for update tool.

The cable modem setup is usually at 192.168.100.1 i believe.

My neighbours cable internet kept going out, and it turned out that the linksys router wasn't updating the DNS as often as the modem was. The fix for that was to go into the router's config and release then refresh DNS, then right click on the network adapter on the computer and select repair. Don't know could be related if you have a linksys modem.

linksys modems are going downhill in quality IMO, i would save yourself alot of trouble and get a D-Link gaming router instead.
