8800GTX & Ubuntu......

post #1 of 12
Thread Starter
Hey guys...

Ok, so I got Ubuntu up and running.... and I've installed: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9755-pkg1 for my 8800 GTX... After hours of fussing with it, I got it to work and the Nvidia Splash Screen comes up w/ X. The problem is, the Screen Resolution settings do not persist. Meaning, everytime I reboot, I have to go back to NVIDIA X Server Settings and apply the correct resolution again--I click apply, then "save to xorg.conf"... but apparently it's not saving...? I'm not entirely sure, but I'm a relative Linux noob... I tried to edit xorg.conf manually but then X wouldn't start......so I reverted.... Help?

Thanks
~Eric

Post your xorg.conf file and I'll tell you want to change, so hopefully you'll get X to start then.

Try editing the xorg.conf file yourself and see if that way the settings stick.

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Look where your screen resolutions are listed and simply add the one you want.

Try just copying the information for your monitor (name, model), the refresh rates, and leave the screen section unchanged (the default one) with the only addition being the extra resolution.

Edit: I don't know what method you used to get the drivers working, but try giving these guides a shot http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=301499

Do you have a backup? Otherwise just reconfigure the thing and start over;

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Then follow the guide I posted earlier. Have you tried using the restricted manager thing yet?
