Noob problem

Ok I realize this question is going to sound like an big noob question. Well...that is what I am. This only the second computer I have assembled. The first I had little knowledge, but I have since learned much more. I was trying to build this system right this time. I bought a Dell during the semester at college because I needed something right away and didn't have the thousand plus to put on a new computer. Anyways I have scavenged the Dell for parts. I was suprised that the processor came out so easily. In case your wondering the processor is an X2 3800+. I figured Dell would probably pull something and make it incredibly difficult....they are definetly a step up from HP. Anyway I recently purchased a new case, motherboard, and heatsink. Here is my problem. I have an ASUS M24N- SLI motherboard. I also purchased the Thermal Take Silent Boost RX K8. I am having the worst time getting the clips far enough down to lock on both sides of the heatsink. I put it on one side fine and then the other I can't seem to get it to budge no matter how much force I use. I don't want to break it. The first time I did this with a previous computer I didn't seem to have as much trouble. I remember it being difficult but I got it eventually. It was a cheap fan, but I paid a little more for this one because I wanted something a little quiter. Anyway I wondered if others had this same problem. I read a lot of reviews before I bought it, and there was no mention of difficulty. I can only assume that it is because I am new to this experience. I really like having a computer that I assembled and can control everything unlike Dell where I am limited to their software and bios options. If someone could please help even if it is something simple I would greatly appreciate it. I know the computer building experience shouldn't be this difficult.

I am assuming AM2. Either way it said on the package that I could use it for an AMD X2 processor.

What ever the newer socket type is. I had a friend who had an X2 3800+ which I believe was a 939 pin. I am certain that this is newer, but I have no idea how to find out. I can't really check because the computer is taken apart at the moment. I am still learning all of this. It is still relatively new to me.

I am fairly certain it is AM2. This fan says it fits AM2/939/754. So it doesn't really matter right? Either way I have a 939 or an AM2. What is 754? Isn't 939 simply the pin that was used for the older AMD 64? I know this is irrelavant to my first question, but I am curious.

If the socket type is AM2 you will not be able to use Silent Boost RX K8, just check your memory module is it DDR2 or 1 ??

Why does the package say it can fit an AM2 then? I don't understand. When I read Neweggs specs it said it fit AM2. Did they lie? Does it only fit certain AM2s? How can I avoid this in the future. No one mentioned else mentioned this in the reviews. So you can see why I am confused.

Do they make 754 X2 3800+? Regardless the packaging said 939 or AM2 shouldn't either be ok?
