I would put the problem down to Windows then. Did it boot in Safe Mode?

I would say it is a Windows issue then. Try going back to a system restore point in safe mode or reinstall Windows.

Oh right, well that will probably fix it. Unless it is a hardware issue that is only used within Windows but not in safe mode.

Possibly an unstable overclock if you are overclocked. Maybe your RAM is bad near the end of a stick so it isn't used when in safe mode as there isn't as much RAM being used.

i am having the same problem and the computer "restarts" / "crashes" at the end of the Windows xp loading screen. I am sure that it has to do with the computer its self and not the hard drive because i checked it with another computer and it worked fine.

I am thinking it has to something with the motherboard or the cpu because sometimes it boots into windows fine and then poof its off again.

Also for sure not a ram its self but maybe you/ our ram circuit.

Best solution is to run Memtest to make sure you RAM is OK.

If you RAM is OK, load up a Linux Live CD. If that works, you may have a hard drive problem.

i've had this same problem i dunno, 20 times or so. reinstalling windows always fixes it....well not always, once or twice the problem was VERY adamant about sticking to me.

restore points dont work, cables around grounded (incorrectly) memory should very well be fine (but will test anyway...)

this has always proven to be a software issue. i'm a bit of a...well...un-mentionable... so i tend to collect a bit of trash on my computer. no its not from porn, otherwise i'd have this problem MUCH more often. lol

its certainly a malicious install of some small files. usually i will find a strangely named folder like "PDD" or "AKW" or some other variation of three letters, that to my knowledge was never there before (always in the OS partition somewhere) so, i go through and look for things that seem completely out of place and totally vague as to their purpose and rename the files contained therein, for example i'd rename some file in one of these folders from "sixxk8" to "sixxk8badfile.txt" and sometimes that will trick these malicious infections, that is of course if i've found the culprit files. same thing with the containing folders, rename them. half the time access isn't allowed to rename the files / folders, which i don't know how to work around...i dont like that, its my damned computer, who else should be giving / having permission!?

at any rate...i'm having the problem again, and just thought i'd take a shot in the dark and check the forums and see if anyone had made any progress on these issues (this bug is pretty common...problem is..is that the small variations in format of the bug that are constantly changing usually keep people from making an end all beat all solution to the problem... hence why when my computer does this to me 5 times in a row, and ad-aware, CCleaner, AWC, and system restore points don't do anything...i immediately pop in my windows disk and dissapointedly get started)
