SLI question...

Thread Starter
I just bought a 7600 GT to hold me over until I can get another card for SLI, but I need to know one thing... do I need to get another 7600 GT? If I can potentially buy a better card, what would be the drawback, if any, from running two cards of different specs? Like say the 7600 GT and a 7900 GS? I'm not looking for recommendations on what card to buy, but just curious, from a technical standpoint, about running different PCI-E cards in SLI mode. I mean, is it like RAM where when running two different specs of RAM they default to the lowest common denominator, or your slowest RAM?

Second question, since I don't have two cards to test this out with, how will I go about OCing my video cards once I have both installed in SLI mode? Or will this be blatantly obvious when I get to it...? Mind you my GPU OCing has been limited to ATI cards. But do you OC both cards at the same time, or one at a time? Do they perform better if they operate at the same level? Thanks for the help!

Both cards have to have the same chipset, but you can put an oced model in the primary slot, and the card in the secondary slot will run at the OC speed..

I think you just OC the primary card, then put in the secondary card, and it will run at OC speeds

When SLi is enabled, the Core and memory clocks will downclock to the value of the lowest clocked card. When it comes to overclocking, whatever clocks you set will be applied to both cards when SLi is enabled.
