Which way to go? Intel Vs. AMD

Well I enjoy my sig rig however my motherboard is fried. I am currently debating on buying a new motherboard to replace the one listed, or... selling my 2 opteron processors, and 2 sets of DDR 500 and build an Intel system. I was looking at the quad cores but seem a bit pricey right now, and best thing for them at this point in time is folding. So I am looking more towards a conroe and possibly the xeon version.

My questions are..

If I get a C2D Normal or Xeon how much performance increase should I expect over the opteron 165 at the same clock speeds? For example 2.8GHz.. rep+ for examples such as super pi times etc...

How well do these processors overclock?(not on phase change lol).

Any Idea how many operations per cycle they do?(just curious)

You should breach 3.0Ghz without haveing to mess with chipset voltages on the E63x0 and E64x0 Core 2's. The E6600 is capable of 3.6Ghz on air cooling with the right motherboard, though 3.8Ghz is possible with revised cooling.

All AMD CPU's have been practically wiped off the board

Not a single AMD CPU below 23s

You shouldn't judge by ops per cycle, just as you shouldn't judge by clock speed. Though the rule of thumb is that a Pentium 4/D CPU would perform 6 ops per cycle, an Athlon 64/X2 does 9 and a Core 2 does 12 per cycle.

In short, Intel slaughters AMD in every way possible. Period.

Go Intel for now.

I wouldn't go Xeon, just go with a normal Conroe chip.

Be sure to check out the CPU scores from the ORB links in my sig aswell. Below is a screenie of my own personal SuperPi 1MB time, nobody useing a K8 will beat it.

im going to be honest with you.

just get another motherboard and run your setup. Think about it, will you actually see a big significant diffrence between the opteron you have now and a C2D?

Well, thats what I am trying to see if it is going to be worth it. I thought about going with a quad core however price vs performance isnt that great, yes its super fast however the performance doesnt out perform the price.

is that your 24/7 clock, what do you run on temps? and what kind of cooling do you use?

Edit: also is there much of a difference in overclockability between the E6300, E6400, and E6600? And what sort of an overclock should I expect to see from an E6400?

I have my system running at 3.6Ghz 24/7, though I currently have my side panel of until I replace the window with some mesh, to maintain ventilation. Aside from that, I have an extra 120mm fan blowing air over my NorthBridge and graphics cards.

From what I've seen in from other people's results with an E6400, you should hit 3.2Ghz with very little effort, with a decent quality board of course.

Yes? I definitely seen a difference between my old opty setup and my C2D.

You will see a major difference, especially in gaming.
