Instructions per clock cycle - AMD x9 C2D x12 PD x6

SO

C2D at 3000 mhz = AMD at 4000 mhz (3000 * 12 / 9)
or
AMD at 3000 mhz = C2D at 2250 mhz (3000 * 9 / 12)

Go Intel for now.

I wouldn't go Xeon, just go with a normal Conroe chip.

anyway, this is a tough question, if you have the money, a nice high end build would be amazing, but if you have less than like 600, I would stick with your current setup. also you could buy a cheap mobo and wait for price drops in, I think september

I have pushed e6400 to 3.47, but I really don't know what I am doing, lol.
I keep it at 3.33 stable.

i got the e6400 at 3.52 stable (440X8, 1:1 (ram at ddr880)) ROCK SOLID orthos 24-hr.
with my lapped BT TT and crappy thermal grease, 33/30 idle; 54/51 load

and with better ram than i have, you can go much higher! i set my ram timings to 7-7-7-21 and i hit 4.0 stable (500X8); needless to say, my 3.52 is faster with 5-5-5-12 ; and i run it 24/7 no probs on a $110 shipped Gigabyte-s3 from the egg

C2D or XEON should be 1.5 times better performance and better overclocking as well!!!!

I was looking at the quad cores but seem a bit pricey right now, and best thing for them at this point in time is folding. So I am looking more towards a conroe and possibly the xeon version.
If you can't wait, just go ahead and get a new MoBo for that Opteron.

If you wait, by the end of July, Q6600 is going to be down to $266 and G.Skill RAM is very inexpensive and most likely will remain that way. So, that'd be the best time to get a Quad-Core CPU.

Though if you don't do PI or 3DMark 24/7, go get a new MoBo, difference wise you may see a difference but most likely it won't be a night and day difference.

But it'd be nice to wait and get a Q6600 + P5B-Plus + G.Skill DDR2 800 when the time comes. So, get your priorities done first and think about timing.
