8800GTS AS5 Application..

Thread Starter
Wow is all I can say. What a job cleaning up my eVGA 8800 GTS and retrofitting her with AS5!

After about an hour and a half she's back up running and so far so good -- not fried yet so my application job went OK I think. I can see now why they put those damned thermal padding/gauze whatever on them since I was fearing not making good contact but idle she's running 55-58c and under load I've hit 68c.

Being new to this family of cards, and applying AS5 to the GPU, driver and memory IC's, these are great temps I think? Anything to watch out for other than spikes in temp?

Thanks all...

Just wondering, was there as much thermal goop as was on mine?

68c load is pretty high, let the AS5 set in, then think of doing a pci-fan mod. My load temps are about 61-63 at 625 core

Yep. Was quite a job getting it all cleaned up and AS5 in the proper places. I was very worried about the tiny IC's near the rear end of the card. I used an Xacto knife to spread it thin and on the entire surface. I even as much as rubbed some on the heatsink contacts so as to fill in the possible pits in the metal and make better contact over the long haul.

Wait, did you remove the thermal pads on the memory IC's? I left them there, just changing the thermal paste on the GPU

Yes I took the pads off everything, cleaned up with alcohol and spread AS5 on each IC. Might not have been the thing to do but so far so good.. Playing BF2 now full settings, not sure of FPS but fast and running 62c load now.

Ummm...You should had left the thermal pads on Some 8800 series coolers dont make full contact with the GPU and the memory chips. You should check for gaps

Agreed.. I checked the most I could and tightened a bit more than usual to make sure they were making contact. I've been playing BF2 now over an hour straight so I figured it something was wrong it would have gone by now..

Lets hope!

I myself removed the pads just now. Took quite a while but I did not spread everything AS5. I left the pads (or the remaining of them) on the little tiny ummm chipy thingies, anbd removed all the big ones. I spreaded on them Artic Cooling MX1 thermal compund that has no metal in it. The only reason I did not bother to put AS5 is before first.. I do not have than much.. lol and second, I will buy another coller as soon as VF1000 is out and will get ratings. HR-03 looks good but still I love zalman and think VF1000 will rock. Aw well time will show. Well not soon I will start the tests ^^
