7TB server

Thread Starter
Ok,
I am really new at this, I have someone that wants to do a 7TB media server on his home. I was looking around newegg, but still am not quite sure what I will need. 2 other people are saying I should get get a 45 port switch and just plug in 1TB or 750gb HD's as I need them. I would think they is a much better way to go about making a 7TB server, then just a bunch of network HD's plugged into a switch. But in media center I guess it would not really matter about all the drive letters. Also I keep thinking what happens when we go all the way up to z:\\??? Can you go to DD:\\?

That's the build part, all i know. Someone else will have to tell you the networking. Streaming large amounts of data isn't cheap.

I priced out that 10 x 750gb are cheaper then 7 x 1 TB drives, so I was thinking of doing it like that.

So using that abit board we are just talking about having a TON of drive letters right?

problem is, the Abit board only has 9 SATA ports. And i'm no RAID expert, but i'm pretty sure when it's in RAID0, there is only 1 virtual drive, whose space expands across all 7 or 10 physical drives. Looking at the wikipedia article, it works faster because the data is broken up and saves different pieces of a file to each disc. So then it reads all of them at once, taking the file at much faster speed. So only one C: drive.

Only problem with RAID 0 is if one drive fails you are screwed.

yep. So be sure to get good quality drives, don't shake them around (ever) and keep them cool. Of course the ultimate cost crazy thing would be to back up a RAID0 array. RAID 0+1. I would have to ask someone else for more info on how to set that up though.

If you are interested in doing raid at all, you should probably get a raid controller card because any onboard raid will be far to limited for this kind of job.

Have a look here for a controller that might suit your needs.

You'd get it cheaper at 500GB drives, I'm pretty sure 750s and 1TBs are still less cost-effective.
