Rant/Questions...

Thread Starter
Okay, so, AMD has gotten shelled recently because of their low build points due to the continued delay of Barcelona/K10. But what about the FX-70-FX-74's Quad FX? They really never got a chance from what I saw, yet, they ACTUALLY faired pretty well from the benchmarks that I saw, which were few and far between because they simply dismissed them. I mean, I understand that it would take an enthusiast to use them, as they had to be paired, and it was a little on the costly side, but so are the quad cores on Intel's side. No one even gave it a try, and the architecture of it all has just seemed to die... Heck, I may look into purchasing this system just to give it a proper go...

NO, I am NOT a fanboy. Just a man with a curiosity complex.

The last Intel price drops kind of put paid to the FX-74 being a realistic enthusiasts choice. A Q6600 is much cheaper, doesn't require a specialist motherboard, uses less power and can be overclocked to around 3.2Ghz with little effort. Hopefully K10 will fair better but from what I can see so far, all AMD have done is introduce a shared L3 cache that not many desktop applications use, and make a few changes to the way the processor executes certain algorithms. AMD's jump to 65nm will also allow for higher clock speeds to be achieved but I feel that they're going to have to come out with some better improvements than the ones I've mentioned. Time will tell...

Well they should perform a lot better than the intel offerings because of the true quad core architechture vs. two dual cores slapped together. Also the FSB design by intel is getting at the end of its spectrum. AMD's HyperTransport should also speed things up quite a bit.
