Wine comes with the best DX support the Wine has to offer. It's mighty damned good IMHO as far as Linux is concerned.... When you fiddle with it, You're asking for headaches..... I've tried nmessing with it and I almost always end up reinstalling... wine is supposed to go Ver 1.0 somtime eraly this year... It would be worth the wait... MINDED NOT EVERYTHING WILL BE PERFECT. But it will be the vest offering ever!!!!! Hang in there it WILL get better!!!!!!!

I almost positve that Wine has an equilelent to DX level to G installed, There really is nop reason toupgrade. And when In MHO you istall DX what -ever you break Wine. Wine has the best DX it can layer. In other words Wine

Wine
Is
Not an
Emmulator.....

It is an Application Interface. It is built on what Windows has to offer at the time Wine is released. You are best served to leave it alone as far as DX is concered. Just let it be. When Wine I upgraded, DX is improved too.. I've read that Wine will go from Beta to 1.0 soon. Be patient. This is an OPEN SOURCE project..... We will have our way when they improve upon it. It's not a given but a gift. Some good hearted Souls work on tis project. Hopefuly soon we can all rid ourselves of MS depedenecny and and go Linux all the way. Right now my only hold backs are FEAR. Bioshock, and STALKER. Other than that I am Linux all the way.... I used to be MS free but the damned good games keep me from being MS Free..... hang in there!!!!!!

Do I need to do anything to get games to work in Linux under wine? Any tweaking or this or that? Or do I just install via wine and run?

Wine has it's own "DX 9.xx" code.

Well Resident Evil 4 was telling me it needed some DX9 stuff, so I went about the process on that site (going through that list and setting things to "native" and/or "built in"), and I installed DX9. Since installing DX9, that particular error has been cured.

I almost got it working, but now I got some SecuROM bull crap holding me back when I try to start up the game... That is most unfortunate... I would really have enjoyed playing that game on my computer...

SecurRom shouldn't be a major problem. But if you installed DX you probably hosed Wine. Use the latest version of Wine. It usually has more DX improvements. If you're using debian see here. From my own personal experience if the game insists that you install DX don't. Just forget about the game... Or see if there is a separate setup proggie on the disk... Also check the Wine DB here. Make sure you game is compatable with Wine. Also read the Entries for you particular Game and you may fined some workarounds... If you hosed Wine just delete your ~./wine dir and open a teminal and
Code:
wineconfig
. That will get you back to basics. But mind you that will hose any apps you already have installed. If you have any apps installed you can also
Code:
wineconfig
but that won't change any registry entries or changes you've made to /system or /system32.

My best suggestion to you is that you check the Wine DB and also look and see if there is a Linux client for your games...

Best Of Good Luck THG!!!

A FAQ to compile your own kernel would be useful.

On the note of a multi button mouse.

I use btnx for my G5 v2 mouse, and it works great. Not only do all the buttons work with not playing with the dangerous xorg.conf (I had to re configure it twice), but you can also use custom commands for each mouse button. Browser and other actions are supported.

You can even have a modifier button, so you can have a different setup for different things.

This works in Gnome / KDE.
