Weird boot problems

Thread Starter
Well i just got my new pc here and it seems my harddrive is broken, so i formatted my old harddrive and tried to install windows xp on it. When i start my computer everything goes well but then it says

"Disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter".

the strange thing is when i unplug my harddrive it does let me install xp but it doesn't find any harddrive.

could someone help me?

Set the boot priority in the BIOS to utilize the cd-rom first, then the hard drive ect... Then during the install reformat the drive using the windows format utility and you shouldn't have any trouble at all.

Allright can you guide us through what happens?

Like what the mobo's post messages are.
if it searches for a cdrom in the drive (cd drive spinning up)

And did you select ide0 or ide1 (sata just the same) as bootup HDD

Go into BIOS and make sure that the system boot order is A;C, not C;A or any other variation. If the floppy isn't the first boot drive the computer won't recognize that there is a floppy in the drive and will give you that error message. If the boot order is already set A;C, then the problem is probablythat the hard drive needs to be replaced. Also, make sure that the floppy drive is set to the correct size in BIOS, e.g. 1.44 MB.Is the HDD set as master? If the HDD is set to master, try CS (cable select) Is the CMOS battery good? Are the IDE cables in the right connectors? Is that a seperate XP operating system, or is it just from another computer? Do you have the correct drivers for the MOBO's chipset and all the cards? This is one of those problems where it's best to proceed in a systematic way. The problem could be hardware or software. Let's start with simple hardware items

Make sure no floppies or CDs in their respective drives.
Make sure hard drive is listed as one of the boot devices in BIOS.
Make sure hard drive is recognized when you start up or in BIOS. If not check cables.

Post back if/when you have tried these.
