Can't Decide on new CPU

Thread Starter
Ok, so i was given the task of building my family a new computer since their old one shot craps a few weeks ago... but before i can start thinking about the whole build... i need to figure out which processor to go with... i've got three in mind.... i just don't know what to do... (also didn't know if i should have posted this here or in the intel forum... i just did here since there are two amd's i'm looking at..)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103778
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Brisbane

http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819103771
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ Windsor

http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819115016
Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 Conroe

from what i understand, the brisbane would be a wiser choice over the windsor, better overclocking, plus it's cheaper... but the conroe is just looking dead sexy, and from what i understand, it overclocks superbly.... i'm thinking it's really up in the air between the brisbane and conroe..... leaning slightly towards conroe.... can anyone shed a little bit of insight on this...?... thank you al very much.

While conroe is the way to go for the more powerful systems.

Grandma, Ma, and Pa certainly do not need a Core 2 Duo.

If it's just a family computer for internet and stuff, then i would go with a x3600, the budget master.

You can throw the saved $$$ into a low end GFX card for vista, or a bigger monitor. Or what ever you like.

it's mainly for my mom, dad, little bro and little sister... which my brother games on the computer... and they want something that is going to give them a nice long run, so they don't have to worry about upgrading later on.... so that's why i was really leaning towards the conroe....

3600 is still a good budget gaming PC option.

I mean it is used all the time around OCN for the budget gamer.

What is the budget?

mainly FPS games like bf2, bf2142, oblivion, alot of online rpgs...

for GPU i was thinking http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130085
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130056

leaning more towards the 8600

does the 3600 OC well? and their budget was about $800... give or take $100....

I know from experience that 5600+ will defeat the E6420. This is because the 5600+ is a 5200+ with slight modifications and the 6420 is basically a 6300 same deal. The 5200+ (noting it has less L2 then 5600+) will defeat a 6300 even on overclock. In fact a 5200+ and 5600+ can be overclocked into a 6000+ (the 6000+ is basically a 5200+ with an overclock it even has the same core.) Considering everything your better off 5600+ no doubt in my mind. It can be overclocked to 3.2ghz+ (I've seen it at 3.4 on some sites.) Plus the 5600+ is cheaper then the E6420 by quite a bit.

Final cut : 5600+ easily cheaper, more powerful. (NOTE : It will be harder to overclock!!)

Ok in the gpu the 8600 would have some definite advantages. It is a DX10 card so you can play the new games coming out in the future. And of course play the current games out today. However looking over the specs the 7900 GS may just have an advantage on current games (as long as your not running vista.) The 8600 has slightly higher clocks, but a smaller interface. If your not going to run vista i suggest the 7900 gs, otherwise id chose the 8600 for the DX10 capabilities.

Final cut : For vista - 8600, otherwise - 7900 gs.
