If the budget will stretch and you want the PC to have the longest run possible, go with the Core 2. It is the better processor, and will reach 3.4-3.6ghz, at which speeds it will beat any AMD.

For the GPU, if we are looking to the future, go with the 8600GT. Ok it doesnt touch the 8800's but it will have alonger lifespan than a 7900GS

with all the stuff i've got lined up, i'm pretty decent with the budget, so getting the c2d would be no problem... and i've heard/seen some of the speeds getting up to 3.0, 3.2 and such... but 3.4-3.6?.... i'm assuming that wouldn't be on air?.... how easily could it reach speeds of 3.0-3.2?... and yeah... looking into the future i also see the 8600 going stronger and futher than the 7900....

another reason i'm leaning towards the c2d is because i've always messed with AMD stuff... but... i'm curious to work with intel stuff too....

If you want the best for your money right now, you do plan to overclock and the system is oriented towards games, then there's no two ways about it. Go Core 2 Duo. This is coming from someone who has gone from Opteron 165 @ 2.8GHz to Core 2 Duo overclocked to a similar speed. The Core 2 Duo is an absolute breeze to overclock and it runs a fair deal cooler especially if it's a good clocker.

I understand the whole X2 5600+ vs E6300/E6400 debate and that the X2 5600+ has an edge over the two Core 2's but quite simply if you overclock the Core 2's will pull ahead with ease.

There is the X2 3600+ which is a fantastic processor but I'm not so sure how good a buy it'll be once the Pentium E2140/E2160's pricings have settled.
