QX6700 retail phase unit problems?

post #1 of 11
Thread Starter
Forgive me if this was answered elsewhere. I did read a reference in one of the threads that their might be or is a condensation problem generated by the Quad's heat that isn't addressed by the retail units? I think it said that some customization had to be done but it didn't seem definitive?

Is there a problem with the MachII or Lightspeed units and the QX6700?

From what I know the c2d's arent cold bugged till about -120c or so so that wouldnt be your problem unless your running ln2 or triple cascade and then you just give it more volts to warm it up a bit.

The problem isnt with the condensation because if you do it right no air will get in there and there wont be anything to condense. The issue is with the amount of power out put of the quadcore when oced and the load rating of the phase units. The machiigt and vapos arent designed for that amount of power, they are tuned for usually around 200w heat output. Basically its not gonna be able to handle it more then likely.

Ask knitelife though hes got some quad cores and phase so hes more upto the times on phasing quads then I am.

I opened up a new thread in the phase forum and wankerfx essentially said the same thing to wit I will need a custom unit. Damn, I wanted to plug and play with a retail version from a established company I could scream at if a problem occured that was not of my doing.

Thanks for explaining the distinction between condensation and the heat output.

USForces was kind enough to give me a link to these folks in the UK who have a retail quad ready phase;

http://www.extremeprometeia.com/acatalog/custom.html

$1800Cdn + shipping from the UK. Ouch!!!!

There must be someone in North America who is producing quad ready phase as compared to buying a MachII and having it customized. Maybe I'm wrong i.e. not enough demand.

Well the regular retail was about $1000 US and this is about $1070 US so thats about right for one of these things. Thats why you try to find someone that is making them over here and they are usually much cheaper.

I think that 800 Sterling is about $1680USD. frozenpcu is selling the MachII for $900USD or about $970Cdn. So to upgrade to quad ready seems to be almost a double in both us and cdn.

I run a Vaporchill Lightspeed on a Q6600. Like Madmax22 said. The retail ones are not tuned for the quad cores so I cant go nuts like I probably could with a C2D. I went for the best overclock I could get without going too high on the vcore, and it handles it fine. But if I realy wanted to push my system, I dont know if the phase would handle it.

BTW, I picked up my phase unit for $250 on ebay. Sure it was a gamble, but it worked out alright and I am happy with it.
